Title: How / where to start?
Post by: AndyB on January 17, 2020, 14:31:52 PM
Hi all,

I have just finished a build of a 2m RES glider and need some guidance. I haven't flow a glider in over 20 year and even then it was not RC.

I'm assuming the best place to start is a wide open field with little to no wind and do some hand throws and see that it's all flying straight and that I have my CG setup all right.

Then I would love to move to slope soaring.

Do I need insurance?

Any advice / guidance would be very helpful

Thanks guys,

@Ralph was very kind and we got on a call and he filled me in on all the info... Probably too much for a beginner to take I'm but I think I know where to start.

I'm really looking forward to getting this glider in the air but I'm afraid I will definitely need some of you guys to help me. Please do let me know if you are heading out and I can tag along and learn the ropes. I'm based in Dublin west btw

Hi Andy,
Will be gliding tomorrow at Kilakee from carpark overlooking reservoir on road to Glencree from about 2pm.  If wind more NW will be at SE end of valley.  Forecast is light so will be RES weather. Join us if you can. Nice looking glider by the way.

Hi Andrew, welcome to the forum! :)

Nice looking glider you have! Where about in Dublin are you? I am in churchtown if you are nearby.

Today looks like a very good day to give it a go and trim it. I should be in kilakee at around 2 as well. Very light stuff day by the look of it. And cold!!

Let us know if you plan going up, or if you need directions of course.

Alright, quick message.
Another great day in a cold paradise! January delivered on the flying so far  :-*

Close to no wind and a lovely sky, and a good crowd out there with Peter, Jim, Joe, myself and Andrew.

Was good to meet you and hope you enjoyed the day with Thibault. Soooo... I hear you ask :)

Andrew’s glider did 2 trim flights and I have to say, fly beautifully, but the lack of lift did not allowed him to get stick time with it. But Andrew did flew. The Ava :) a good 20 minutes in the air and made it look easy.

Anyway, more later, Andrew is looking for ideas for a second model. Might be worth opening a beginner’s topic so the info can be used by others :)

And here are a few photos of this lovely afternoon. Enjoy :)
