Busy eh ? :D
Here is a preview of my next project !
Rudder.. No glue... :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6303.JPG)
A rib...
And the box... Full ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6309.JPG)
All plywood, and will be sheeted with varnish...
I'll give more info as soon as I start the build ! :D
-
Looks good! I think I know what it is! :D
-

Strangely enough, the rib looks much smaller in photo that is really is :?:
Or I have a big hand, not to scale... :D
-
A few datas...
Scale :1/4
WS : 3.39 mtrs
Lenght : around 1.5mtrs
And lots of wood ! :D
-
hmmm :?: :?: :?: :?: . What could it be. I'm going to have to get out my Martin Simons Sailplane books now.
-
I think I might know what it is :D . But can you tell me Fred what year this glider can from.
-

1933 for this version :P
:-#
-
Well based on that information I guess it can only be a :-# :-# :-# :-# :D :D :D
-
What what what ??? :D :D
-
Well, I'll wait till you build a bit more to be sure :D :D :D
-
Alright so, I managed to have one of my big table free of rubbish over the week end !
And I also had the right to spend 1 hr into the workshop ! :D It's Christmas !! :D :D
Here we go...
Starting with the wings for once...
The ribs and various parts are lay on the plan..
The profile is a MS535... All the ribs are made of 3mm plywood. Spars are 8x8mm pine from the local hardware shop.
First job, is to cut the end of the spars to fit in the root rib.
What's need to be cut :
And the fit...
After that, it's just a question of gluing the ribs to the spar...A few bits are glued during the process, like the aileron servo frame :
And the big part of the wings, the airbrakes box/frame.
All the parts are glued together "in the air", all the parts slotting together to have all that done accurately...
And the box is then glued on the spar, and the rear end of the ribs, glued to the box...
And we can glue the rest of the ribs... Always check for perpendicularity during the entire process !
And finally, the top spar is glued.
Everything is set for drying overnight with a few weights there and there...
Results tonight ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6561.jpg)
And that was the end of my hour !
Tonight, plan is to glue the TE and the aileron frame. And I will have a look at the airbrakes system ! Works in theory, but in practice, that can be another story !
-
And I will have a look at the airbrakes system ! Works in theory, but in practice, that can be another story !
Thats for sure!!!
-
I know it's all laser cut a fits together perfectly but, I'm still amazed how quickly you can build these machines   :?: :?:
Looks sweet so far
-
Imagine trying to cut those ribs out with a fret saw!!! Great build Fred - a thing of beauty - although I'm not sure what it is yet.
-
It's a :-# :-# :-# :-# :-# :P :P . Nice job Fred   .
-
Thank you all !
A bit of progress yesterday evening :D
Put the aileron's frame in place. Frame is in 3mm plywood, slotted in place.
And I then glued the TE for the wing and the Aileron's TE...
And finally, I put the wing joiner tubes, made of 12mm diameter aluminium tube, for a 10mm wing joiner inside...
2 of them, a bit too much, but like that, I'm sure nothing will move ! :P
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6569.JPG)
And you can see on this photo a small mistake... I leave it to you to find ! Corrected now on the plan, must have felt asleep between 2 measurements ! :?:
Another mistake, not a huge one, but still ! When I checked the airbrakes, I remembered how they should go into the wing.. And I should have put the airbrakes and the mounting inside the box before gluing it to the wing ! :(
Ah well, I'll do that for the next wing, but I did a test yesterday, and you can still mount everything when everything is glued inside the wing, that just take more time to do...
Anyway, I did a test of the airbrakes, just to see them working...
The airbrakes parts :
Closed :
And open :
All good ! :D Spacers are made of 3mm plywood, and I used 2mm screws to fix everything. Axles are in 5mm carbone tubes, and the axle will them go through the airbrakes box in the wing and the airbrakes mounting plate... Not sure if it's clear, but a few photos of the system will clear the idea ! :D
Stay tuned !
-
Ah yes. I see the mistake. At rib No 3. Looks great though Fred. Keep up the good work :D :D .
-
keep it coming Fred! :D
-
I knew it was a Grunau Baby :D :D :D , seriously I did :P :P .
-
Alan, what were you thinking this glider was ? Honest ! :P
A bit of work tonight between 2 nappies, bottles and all the fuzz around, with the rudder...
The pieces :
And after 5 minutes and a bit of sanding...
I'll glue the TE tomorrow (10mm balsa)
-
Alan, what were you thinking this glider was ? Honest ! :P
I thought it was a glider made from glassfiber shit :P :P . But seriously looking at the shape of the parts and the year it was made, it could only have been the Grunau Baby. But I would not have known if it was'nt for Marten Simons books.
-
Did not have enough free time yesterday to commit to gluing something (was going to start the elevator...), so instead, I put the fuselage together quickly to have a look (curious me ??)
Hop, no glue :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6603.JPG)
All looking good so far.
And I've put everything back in the box, I'll go back to the fuselage later, after I've made the second wing (that was more of an apetiser of what is coming next :D )
-
Great work Fred.
-
Thanks Anthony ! :D
-
Still moving ! :D
Here is today's work, with the elevator.
All the parts :
Mostly 10mm Balsa and 2mm plywood.
As usual, everything is put on the plan. The elevator ribs are slided into each slots on the stab TE/LE, and glued... I have to admit that I used thin CA everywhere here...
Really easy...
A few adjustments are needed there and there for the ends of the ribs to fit tight...
And after... Well, not that long, you have a fix elevator ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6628.jpg)
Now to the moving part !
Same as the fixed one, except this is not build on the plan, but "in the air". Same principle...
2 halves. They are then joined with a piece of 3mm plywood glued with epoxy.
Et voila !
A bit of sanding will then be required to smooth everything.
Happy, but the idea at the design process was to have a stab ready to be covered once glued and sanded... But because I want a all plywood finish, I will have to add 0.4mm on the elevator LE to apply the vanish on.
Can definitively be left as is if you go for a covered/painted finish.
So far, I roughly spend 5 hours on the project :D
Tomorrow, back to the wings !
-
Looks great Fred :D :D . Keep up the good work. You realy do build fast  . Just out of curiosity, what software do you use to design your wings etc, Compufoil, Profili 2?
-
Thanks Alan,
Sorry, forgot to answer your question
For the wings, I use Tracfoil (http://fly.to/tracfoil), but the ribs webbing are made in Turbocad.
So, had an hour to spare this week end, time to go back to the Grunau Baby !
Work done on the fuselage, but this time, everything is glued !
Almost finished and ready for the servos to be installed before doing the sheeting in 0.8mm plywood.
All the formers are glued to the building template, just make sure that everything is square.
I started from the front to tail, gluing all the elements as I progressed (cockpit floor, servo tray...) to keep everything as straight as possible.
The strips are made of 5x5mm balsa.
This is the cabin template, made of 3mm plywood. Happy with that part, just the sheeting needed now ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6953.JPG)
All straight !
The profile is the MS535.
Backbone is glued...
So as the bottom one (at this stage, I was able to move the fuselage around...)
Everything simply slot together :D
And a few more photos...
Guides for the pushrod (5mm sullivan) are integrated to the formers for the elevator, rudder being a push/pull cable.
For once, I keep a log on the time spent, and so far, I have spent 7 and a half hours into this build :D
So far, so good !
-
Not a lot done today...
The fixed rudder squeleton is now in place.
The 0.4mm plywood will then be rolled on it to make the final shape.
-
Servos and snake rod are in ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF6971.JPG)
-
Did a bit of work this week end on the Grunau, and did the second wing...
And with the really good weather this week end, that was time for the first setup of the machine in the garden ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF7001.jpg)
:D
Plan this week is to start the fuselage sheeting.. Should be relatively quick to do !
Not a huge amount of work left to be done now, a few bits and pieces...
-
Looks fantastic Fred. Got to love those ribs! :D
-
Love them ! :D
SHame that I have to cover everything at the end !
One day, do a glider like that, and cover half of it in transparent to show to people how it's made :?:
-
Thats a good Idea. You can show everyone that gilders are strong even thought they are mostly made of empty space :P .
-
Alright, still moving !
Fuselage sheeting is started and should be completed soon :D
For once, I started with the tail, as the same time I've installed the controls linkage etc etc.
But first, started with the sheeting of the fixed part of the rudder, sheeted with 0.4mm plywood.
The last section of the fuselage is sheeted with 0.8mm plywood, and rough holes are made for the cables to go out.
Then, a coat of colored varnish on the rudder, and ready for covering !
And finally, the push/pull cables are in place, and the rudder is linked. It's alive ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF7072.JPG)
I will cover the exit holes for the cables with a piece of plywood, to make is smooth at the end.
And a general view...
Sheeting on the way ! :D
-
Ok, a bit of updates on that one !
All is going well, and that should be finished soon !
I finally started to remove the building jig in the front to put in place the keel.
The elevator is also in place, and the mounting plates with blind nuts are glued in place.
Linkage is also done, and everything is hidden inside the fuselage :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF7110.JPG)
Lots of epoxy, sorry, did a pig job on that one !
Bolts are 4mm diameter.
The elevator linkage is made with F3A type control horn. Great for the job !
It is directly screwed on the elevator, between 2 plywood re-inforcements. Was not too sure about this system, but that is strong at the end ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/DSCF7112.JPG)
And the "L" bent rod at the end. Easy to slide the control horn in it, and don't move once in place !
And that's it for now.. Fuselage is almost finished and completely sheeted in plywood...
I will soon start the wing sheeting and we will be ready for the first flight :D
-
Sheeting well on the way ! :D
Fuselage will be completed soon, and I can then do the sheeting on the wings.
At this stage, all the servos are in place and connected, ready to go !
-
Hi Fred.
Have you finished the Grunau yet?
-
Hey Alan,
No  But should be finished in 5 or 6 hours work. I'll have it for Retroplane :D
Garage is warm enough now, only went back to it last week ! :!:
-
OK Fred. Looking forward to seeing it.
-
hey fred,
some time back, i think at the big l fly-in in april (?), we spoke about the grunau baby kit. you mentioned you were thinking of using a different wing section for slope soaring. just wondering if there was news on that front? a friend of mine (no, not keith!) is interested in the kit but is waiting for news on the wing section.
regards, gb
-
Hey Ger,
Yep, some news :)
Almost finished the updated drawings, with a much more scale build. The 1/3 scale version is on its foot steps too.
The new profile is a HQ. Expect the first cut to be done sometimes in October (very busy month this month!)
I'll keep you updated of course :D
-
thanks fred. now then, 1/3 sc grunau..........verrrrrrrrry interesting!!!!! wing span please?
-
a friend of mine (no, not keith!)

-
At 1/3 Scale that should give it a wingspan of about 4.52m. Is that right Fred?
-
Yep, that is correct :)
-
daycent!!!!
-
Plan for the GBII Fokker type rudder to be available soon!
If you have the Grunau Baby kit, and want to change it to a Fokker Baby, this is the plan you need.

Plan, to replace kit's rudder :
Plans are in 2x A3 sheets, PDF format, to be available to download when I connect :D
-
thanks fred, is the new version of the 1/4sc kit with the hq section ready yet?
-
Hey Ger,
No, not yet, working on it as we speak (at the same time of the 1/3 scale version, but that one is moving faster!)
-
And plan are online! :D
All here : http://www.gliderireland.net/files/GrunauFokkerRudderA3.zip
-
Salut Fred !
Merci, j'en suis justement à dessiner la dérive et hop, tu l'as faite !
:D :D :D
Grosses bises !
Frédéric

Great minds think alike! :D
Les grands esprits se rencontrent quoi... :P
-
hi fred, any news on 1/4 scale grunau baby with new wing section? my buddy, philip, is bursting at the seams to have a look at what's involved in building one!!!
-
Hi Ger,
Yep, still work in progress.
First panels are done, doing the ailerons' panels now, so moving smoothly.
No date as yet, end of month at the very earliest, but a wing will need to be build first to validate it.
-
thanks fred, eagerly awaited as you can imagine!
-
Yep, seems that a waiting list is being made right now by some of my customers.
Trying to get that one out as fast as I can.
And talking about the Grunau, a few photos from Italy, of a very beautiful one
