Ok so I started to build a Doppelraab IV a couple of days ago.
It's a 1/5.3 scale 2.5 metre vintage sailplane designed by Vincent Besançon.
All info available on vincent's Retroplane website http://www.retroplane.net
It's my first vintage glider build. It's a pretty standard approach ply formers with longerons to form the shape of the fuse and a standard built up wing. All covered in solartex.
A great big thank you to Fred for all the ribs cut on his lovely new CNC machine. And very nicely cut they are too!
Evening one
Most of the rigtt wing done.just need to get ribs 1-4 which are ply and being cut by Mr Marie at the moment and then i can finish off

Evening Two
Left wing constructed to the same degree as the right.

Evening Three
Horizontal stab and elevator built.A bit of sanding needed and this is done.

Thats all for now.Back soon :D

Damn Joe ! That is some fast building here !
Looking really good !
I put a link on the Retroplane Forum and let Vincent know that one of his baby is being build over here !
By the way, the plywood parts are done..While I was watching TV
Keep the pictures coming ! :D

Damn, you are getting your wood cut out by Freds CNC machine. I have to mark and cut out may wood the old fashioned way :(. Hopefully I'll have them all marked out by the end of the week.
 I agree with Fred. You are a fast builder. What glue are you using, CA?
-
Well it goes together pretty quickly when all the ribs are cut.A couple of hours for each piece so far. Will get the ply ribs off ya in the next few days. Thanks Fred.Really enjoying putting it together.Want to get it finished and flying in the next few weeks. Then even if I'm very busy next year I know I have a glider for Retroplane.Thats why I'm getting stuck in and building fast.
Guess it is just a construction when the parts are cut Alan. You are really "Building" it'll all be worth it in the end for you I'm sure
:D
P.S yeah using CA,very quick.Need to get a proper building board though MDF will not accept pins!

Another evenings work and an hour today built the fuselage frame
:D :D

I like this glider already :D

That is really nice Joe !! 8)
So, ready for next week end for the maiden flight ? :P :P
Have you already choose the paint scheme for the Dopp ?
Fred

   . Nice Joe. Keep it up. Do you think you will have it done before the year is out.
-
Thanks Lads.Yeah it's lookin' good.Maiden flight new years day maybe
i really like this method of construction and there are so many gliders built this way :D
I'm starting to see the light Fred
-
Yep, you can't go back to fiber-glass shite after that ! :P :P
So many beautifull subjects !
And with a little bit of time, easy to build too ! You will never buy a kit again !
Saying that.. I have ordered servos for the ASW22
Sorry, I need a toy between 2 real flights !
Fred
-
 "fiber-glass shite" you French have a lovely turn of phrase!
Steady on there :D
I'd like to see the ASW22 fly.Would probably spur me on to get a modern 4metre.ASW15,27/28 or ASH26(my current favourite) or some other fiber-glass shite
just noticed your new signature :D
-
:P :P
Yep, but I have to admit that It took time to setup this machine just because it is not interresting.. Not that I don't like it, but because the flight is not really challenging.. No surprise here, that will fly !
With a vintage, you have to pilot the machine from lauching to landing...
More stress, good for us ! :P

Hey, there are some wooden gliders (such as the SF27) that use "fiber-glass shite" :D :D in there construction. I think Fiberglass gliders are great, but so are wooden gliders :D . In fact there is a fiberglass glider I would love to build from scratch some day when I have the skills. Its a French glider, the Pegase.
How big is your ASW22 Fred. Since its an Open class glider a 1/5 or 1/4 scale model would be big.
-
Hi Alan,
The asw22 is around 4mtrs.. Can't remember...
The pegase is a really nice model, but for me, the most beautifull French fiber-glass glider is definitively the Crystal.... Rhhhaaaaaa.... :D
Well, the sf27 is not really a vintage glider for me.. But I may be an integrist on that  :P
So, going to fly this week end with us ?

Haven't had a chance to do much work on the Dopp in the last few days.Almost all the webbing on the fuselage is done.Need to look at the tail now.

Sweet Joe ! :D
Nicely done !
Fred
-
Thanks Fred.
Will try to get some building done over the christmas :D
-
Hi Joe.
Hows the Doppelraab build going.
-
The Pegase is the ugliest plastic glider ever.
Not because it has anything wrong with it, it has... nothing. I'ts the most bland glider ever. It was probably designed by a committtee of grandees drawn from the Sorbonne, with a sub-committee to ponder the name. It looks like a semi-scale model blown up to full scale. If the EU designed a glider it'd look like the Pegase.
The Crystal on the other hand was clearly designed by a madman in a bar, half-drunk, chain-smoking Gauloises, who sat up all night sketching frantically on wine-stained drawings, only pausing to shout, "Non! It must be more sexy!" In other words, it is defintely FRENCH. 8)

:D :D :D
-
:D :D :D . I hope you have nothing against the ASW 20 since the Pegase is based on it (its a ASW 20 with different wings).
-
Haven't been around for a while Alan.Am away until the start of March.Hope to get some work done on the Dopp then!
-
Hi Joe
I think you are almost done and after this nice Retroplane meeting you should highly be motivated. With regard to the design I attached a picture of the one we talked about that week-end. Close to my design but somewhat different anyway.

Hiya Stephan.
Thanks for the picture.Nice scheme.I'm liking the orange at the moment.Need to get it finished now.If I'm not motivated after Retroplane I'll never be!
Thanks again.

Hiya Stephan
Thanks for the motivation!
With work, babies, shop and trying to sell/move house. All building has come to a halt. My workshop is now in boxs
Hope to be to do some building work again soon!
Yeah! Fred kindly signed my up for Retroplane next year. Now I have to sign myself up for some French lessons :D. My daughter just started German in school so that might help too! :D
