Saturdays casualty.

A former Phase 6.

Its been a while since I had a crash this "good".

I don't think a single subassembly is salvagable from it. Even the glassed foam veneer wing...
Oh well, live fast, die young. Its last few seconds were definitely exciting...

More space in the hanger now.

Looks like I'll make 2 get togethers this year, so count me in please.

Thanks, Bill, thanks, Ralph, for your very prompt replies. Sounds like Jeti then.
There was a good breeze yesterday - probably a little too much for the old 100" I had brought expecting the conditions to be lighter. I could have gone back down to get the Flamingo but I could see a shower coming so I went ahead anyway. It coped fine!
The first shower came about 1:00!
Had you many fliers on Saturday? Had the French contingent gone home?
Thanks again,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Many of my clubmates are using Radiomaster T16S for everything - drones, power, gliders. Most are on EdgeTx (vs OpenTx). Steep learning curve, but quite an impressive radio. Not that I fly gliders (anything) very often, but I've been moving all of my gliders onto it. It has the potential to become my single transmitter, for all modes of model aviation. Probably not a good bet as a first radio as my first interactions with it were admittedly very frustrating, but very powerful once one acquires some familiarity with it.

Fred and I were talking and suggested maybe a bring and buy at our first meeting. If anyone has any bits they would like to sell/share/swop with other members please feel free to do so.

I have a 4 inch Record vice in good working order, if anyone would like it.

See you in 2 weeks.

Ralph

Fred,

A long time ago (2015) we had a conversation about some Frsky V8R4 receivers, more precisely, not being able to bind them. You mentioned you had one to two at the time. In the meantime I got mine to bind (to a different radio).
If you still have them, lying in the bottom of a drawer somewhere, I could be interested in taking them off your hands.

I've a developing interest in sub 250 g models...

This arrived in the post the other day. Woohoo.

Even I should be able to turn this one around fairly quickly.

Electrics / Re: MPX Multicont ESC failsafe problem
« on: June 04, 2020, 19:19:32 PM »
Thanks Ralph,

That worked.

Throttle travel and limit set to max. Fixed it.

The rest of my ESCs work fine with 100% travel, but this one needed the full 155%

Don't quite understand why though as the ESC was arming and operating normally until I initiated the failsafe.

We live and learn

Electrics / MPX Multicont ESC failsafe problem
« on: June 01, 2020, 22:06:54 PM »
Lads,

I've obviously not refined my google search term enough as Prof. Google is not being his usual helpful self.

I'm taking advantage of the no fly time and migrating my models to a new (to me) transmitter.

MPX Acromaster, with Acromaster Power Set.

Everything works fine, until I power the transmitter back up after testing the failsafe.
Before turning off the transmitter the motor responds to the throttle as expected.

Then I test the failsafe, by turning the transmitter off.
Failsafe kicks in, motor stops. Happy days.

Then I turn the transmitter back on again...

The ESC just ignores the throttle, I can wiggle the throttle anyway I like, but the only way to stop the motor turning is to turn off the transmitter, again, so that the failsafe kicks in again.

I'm definitely puzzled by this as the Acromaster is the last model I've moved to the new transmitter, but its the only one that has given me this kind of hassle.

All the rest of my models have various far eastern (EMAX/Turnigy/Hobbyking/Ripmax) ESCs, and they all behave normally, as one would expec,t after the failsafe condition is removed (transmitter switched on again).

Maybe the answer really is in the ESC manual, but I've not spotted it so far - though maybe todays sunshine went to my head and I missed it. All off my other ESC's just work, and with the exception of the Acromaster the rest of the fleet is ready to commit aviation. Since none of my cheapo ESCs have this problem I can't believe that its an issue with the transmitter.
I didn't even have to go looking for the ESC manuals for any of my other models.

I guess one solution would be just to swap out the ESC, but I'll need to use the MPX ESC in something, sooner or later.

I've tried moving the throttle to idle and back up again, but no joy - in fact the transmitter won't transmit unless I have the throttle at idle anyway after power up, so no choice in the matter there, but  repeating the arming sequence should not matter as the ESC was powered all through the failsafe test.

Any one come across this before? Any suggestions?

Scale / Re: Pilots?

Hi Bill,

If you're still looking to carve a pilot there are some resources in the Hippocketaeronautics plans gallery.

You'll need to register to download anything, but there's plenty of food for thought in the hippocket plans gallery:

Slope Soaring / Phase 6 Ailerons
« on: May 01, 2020, 07:54:18 AM »
Folks,

Does anyone know if the phase 6 ailerons have changed in dimension over the millenia?

Looking at the kit, the original design had a standard (3kg/cm torque) servo in the middle, so, logically 2 x 1.5 kg/cm servos would suffice for its current incarnation. But that would assume that the dimensions of the surfaces had not changed.

The radio I plan on using for this one is incapable of a crow mix (its been gathering dust for a while), so two rather than four servo wing by default.

Minimum of fettling desired - to the extent of not hacking the wings - as a result of an excess of last minute fettling on the last build.

Chris

PS: I've plenty of 1.6 kg/cm in stock, not so other sizes that'd fit in a P6 wing without requiring blisters etc.

I do believe some of the 'officials' mentioned above were from our own MACI. I see that at least one is on the committee still.

I don't know if the people involved venture on here, but yes 'we', in the royal sense, were part of this feat.

I have to admit I only found out about this well after the event.

There is some info on the web about the aircraft, I believe the motor was a modified OS four stroke, and to reduce drag the successful airframe had only a single aileron.
Construction is best described as 'traditional', it's not the high tech material construction that jumps to mind when this feat is mentioned.

Wikipedia to the rescue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit_of_Butts%27_Farm

The 'little grey cells' are still working.

Hi John,

If you're cutting madslide wings, me too please.

It's been on my "most wanted" list for quite some time.
