Slope Sites in Ireland / Re: New slope site 1 hour north of dublin
« on: April 25, 2023, 14:12:20 PM »
Quick update:

I was on Clermont Cairn a few weeks back and the site is still very much accessible. good few slopes in the area for easterlies most only suited for smaller gliders.
The Cairn itself is easily accessible and plenty of parking - looks like nearly all directions but N-NW have access to a usable slope although landing might be challenging.

Took a spin around and found amazing W facing slopes on the "Forest Drive" at Slieve Gullion. Wind was southernly when I was there which wasn't great but will certainly take a glider or two that way when we visit again.

Un an plus tard... mais sur le plan du MQ, Je mesure 594mm pour une demi-aile, donc je crois que c'était OK :D

Thanks Ralph!

Yes I'm aware of the seasonality. Our club bring out the bashers in winter 🤣
Hoping to meet a few fellow slopers in the new year!

Slope Soaring / Back at it - north Dublin

Hi,

After years of fretting and contemplating I finally got back into the game (thanks COVID Fridays). Joined fingal model flying club just north of where I live (Donabate), and they have a lovely but tiny slope that works perfect for small smaller aircraft but depends on easterlies which are rare enough.

So I finally built the BLH Tito that I bought in 2013 back when I lived in Toulouse waiting for the winds to turn - should work really well there.

Anyone else flying north of Dublin?
Where do you fly? It's a bit flat out here 🤦🏻♂️.

Would love to join a meet up wherever is doable from here.

Thanks!
Karel

Hi Jim,

thanks for that. i heard about this but didn't know the details.

I have no serviceable models at the moment so I will probably drop by some Saturday to chat with a few flyers.
i was supposed to drive out to Mt Leinster today, but a sick baby intervened.
isn't there also an insurance requirement in Ireland?

looking forward to meeting you and the other flyers on the slopes soon.

hi.
i was in bed with a flu the last few days so didn't even get to my PC.

I've always flown gliders. i like the purity of it, no mess no noise. i had a few prop planes early on but never really appreciated it.

where is the flying spot exactly?
is it near the hell fire club?

Hi Fred,

thanks!
We're just above phénix Park. There is a club in the park but I haven't been able to catch them :)

I'll be there this weekend.
looking forward to it

hi,

we've recently moved to Ireland (Dublin) from France and are all unpacked now. ready to prepare a few gliders now that the weather starts picking up.

thought I'd introduce myself and see where i could meet some fellow amateurs.

I saw that the sites discussions are quite old.
where is a man still allowed to fly these days?
can we still get by with 35MHz gear or is 2.4GHz obligatory?
Looking forward to getting out there again.

best
karel
