Thermal / Flat field / NIMSA open and electric 2011
« on: July 03, 2011, 19:10:49 PM »
another great day at mallusk :D
we had the introduction of a spot landing today and it made some difference to the flying  :)
again it was one of those days where one or two people got away and the rest struggled

only disaster of the day was Ronnie   while him and Frank where flying the same slot Ronnie was flying Franks model while his own hit the ground   and Bill had a wee bit of a problem with his motor not turning off on his semi scale discus but damage was slight  :)

once again well done sam on winning the thermal

i managed to beat him in the electric comp  :D  :D

roll on the 31st july to the area open

« on: June 19, 2011, 19:46:58 PM »
finally we got to run our first thermal comp of the year
it was good to catch up with Frank, Ronnie, Tommy, Jimmy, Bill, Mike, Paul and Sam
conditions where challenging and not everyone got an 8 minute round

well done sam for winning again and paul for coming second
for me the pilot of the day was Bill finishing a brilliant 4th place flying his own design 100" model
Bill will probably have the results on www.nimsa.co.uk site

hope to post a few photo's later when terry sends them on  :D

John, richard, Terry Jones and myself all met up this morning in Ballycastle to take the ferry over to Rathlin Island
now the winds this week around the north coast of ireland have been very strong and most days the ferry has been cancelled
so after a lot of should we go or shouldn't we go three of us decided we would go and boy was the crossing rough  :(  :( at one point i was thinking to myself Terry made the right decision stayin on dry land

once we landed in Rathlin we jumped on the bus and that took us to the west light house and this is were the bird sanctuary is and the site that we were going to fly off was perfect in every way

we flew for 3 solid hours and then the bus returned for its last stop of the day.We returned to the harbour and straight back onto the ferry for a much calmer sail home  [-o<

i'm glad we went it was a great experence      we're hoping of doing the same thing next year again

sorry i've no pictures  john and richard had the camera's

we're hoping to fly off other parts of the north coast tomorrow depending on the wind direction  :D

Aerotow / tow line
« on: February 13, 2011, 19:25:53 PM »
never thought the weight of the line used would have an effect on the glider being towed

the picture shows two tow lines both the same length but different weights
because of the model we used as a tug i used the small line now i've got the 1/4 scale cub i started using the heavy line and it's easier seen when you drop it before landing
last year we where able to tow a 3m glider with the top line, but today i was towing a 2.5m ventus and the heavy line made it impossible to tow the line just bowed in the middle and dragged the glider down

unfortunately we didn't get any sort of height and the glider crash landed :!:
a lesson well learned in all the years i've been doing this i was well caught out today   :!:   :(
