Road trips / Cheapest/best/fastest way to Irleland with my van

...Ferry from France to Ireland is the way.
What you'll spend in gas and the UK ferry and tunnel will probably be 2x....

Sorry, but your statement needs to be proven. I took the way Lothar discribed, the charges were cut in half compared to the direct ferry Cherbourg/Rosslar.
Dunkerque/Dover by Northfolk Line and Pambroke/Rosslar with Irish Ferries was by far the cheapest way to go. Furhtermore Northfolk Line gives you the flexibility to go one ferry earlier if you arrive earlier at the port without any surcharge. I made this experience this year as well as outbound as return fare. For both directions we were abel to took a 2h earlier ferry. Boundary conditions: 12m long towed vehicle, 2 adults, 2 childrens, no cabine, but I do not think that this will change for any other condition
At the end you have to spend some time to look for the different possibilities and calculate the fares. Note that in France the highways are toll charged, not in England. Only outbound you have to pay a bridge close to Pambroke, but not on its way back
Cheers

... the only potential problem is a phenomenon we have quite a lot of here in Ireland. It’s a rather unpleasant experience called rain...

... Can anybody recommend a place to stay for Saturday?...

If you want to stay close to Mt Leinster just stay in Bonclaudy in the Must Pub, nice B&B.
Always happy landings and you will see I have not exaggerated  :D

Slope Soaring / Retroplane... In Ireland !
« on: July 22, 2009, 22:42:07 PM »
Hi folks
back in Germany I immediately pulled out my shorts, what a heat here. I am not used to that after two weeks in Ireland  . What to say about the country and the people. Everything I heared before was true, nice and friendly people, great hospitality gorgeous landscape and yes - even the rain was real  :D
Thank you to Fred and Joe for two great weeks, to David for helping to install the awning, to Ralph for encourageing my son Timo in indoor flying and providing the material to do so and all the others I forgot.
Two weeks, which we will certainly never forget.
The picture is one out of our trip to the Kerry, around Dingel based on Joe's advice - at the end of the world
