Club Talk / Getting together for flying!!!!!

If wind is too strong tomorrow (Saturday), perhaps I'll try and get up on Sunday as well.  It looks like Sunday might be the better day.

Dates look good to me.  Won't be able to make all of them, but hopefully most.  Looking forward to them already!

May try to fly at Kilakee this Saturday - depending on wind and cloud base! I need to be away by 3 though, so probably will go up shortly after noon if it is flyable.  Sunday might be OK too.

Great idea to set out some dates for glider meets this spring/summer.  Something to look forward to given the awful weather at present and good to get them into the diary early!  Perhaps we could also do some winching/hand towing and organise an informal thermal event of some kind.  We would need to borrow a flat field somewhere but maybe it could be combined with the aerotowing.

Scale / Pilatus B4 build
« on: January 02, 2008, 19:46:26 PM »
Not really a build tread - I work too slowly for that!  But a progress report on a Pilatus B4 build from an old Mike Trew plan.  As you can see from the photographs, the fuselage is coming on.  Half planked (that took a bit of time!) and currently I am working on the controls before planking the rest.  Made the tailplane last weekend - it is bolted on.  As I have changed the wing section I want to be able to alter the longitudinal dihedral as I suspect that on the plan is too high for the HQ25/12 section I am using.  So far so good - but anyone else building from this plan, watch out for F11 - this does not have the correct profile!

Anyway - best wishes to all for the New Year.  Scamper - I hope all this talk of DG1000s does not mean you have give up on your B4!!!

Scale / 1/3 scale Ka3

Hi Fred,

Wow! Great build and a nice fuselage. You have left me behind already!  Just about got all the bits of the B4 cut out now - just finished the ribs.  Had problems with the outer tapered part of the wing as using the sandwich method the section turned out weird - the outermost rib blank is tiny.  In the end, plotted and cut the ribs individually - at least the section is now consistent out to the tips. Will start on the fuselage assembly over the weekend.  Any advice on how to plank a fuselage?  Never done this before.

Misc / Where to buy Balsa, spruce, ply etc.

I am going to use a HQ2.5/12 section so lets see how that works!  I've modified formers 7 and 8 so as to achieve the right root section on the fuselage.   I guess this will be hard to modify if you have already built the fuselage.  I would'nt worry too much as the model with the original section apparently flew fine and only sufferred in marginal lift conditions. Fred - good idea about a carbon rod.  Are Island Models going to stock brass tube/carbon rods or do you have a preferred supplier?

Scamper,

Very interested to hear you are a bit further down the line on the same B4 project.  Inwoods were OK in terms of wood quality, but they could not supply the spruce spars which surprised me.  The postage from the UK is VERY expensive and has put me off going this route in future. On an order of £71.54, the delivery was £37.75 ..ouch!  Hence my recommendation to try Island Models who I think import from the continent and are based here so it should work out cheaper.

Like you, I was going to go for a piano wire and brass tube joiner system on the B4.  Unfortunately large diameter piano wire is hard to get here - I scoured Dublin before for a joiner for a Sagitta glider I built recently without success.  In the end I managed to get some from SMC in Brighton, UK.  Let me know how you get on with this.  I am also going to go for a different airfoil to that shown on the plan.  I was talking to a chap who built this version of the B4 and he thought that the scale section shown on the plan was not the most efficient in lighter airs so I am going with a thinner Quabeck section.  I guess we can compare performances (eventually!).

Last question - did you build the fuselage in two halves and then join, or did you build one half and then build on the remaining structure?  I was hoping to do the latter.

Hi,

Interested to hear you are building a B4.  Me too - 1/5 scale from a Mike Trew plan but I've only got as far as cutting out the formers so early days yet.  Hope to make serious progress over the winter.  Next step - a larger building board! Which version are you building? Why not try Island Models for balsa!!  Not used them yet but I intend to.  Previous batch of balsa I got was from Inwood in UK over web.  I have also have had good balsa from Green Marine in Harolds Cross, and I got the spruce strips for the B4 wing there recently.

Great - might see some of you there.  No worries if you can't make it.

Hi all,

I am planning a short road trip to Mount Leinster tomorrow to get some flying in after a work-enforced lay-off for the last month.  I hope to be at the Nine Stones from c 2.00 pm if anyone else is interested....

Hi Ron,

Thought you might be interested in this - a 40 year old Imapala still flying (only very occasionally now).  Enjoyed your pictures of the ISR fly in - gliders look great against the sea.  Sorry I was not able to make it down.

That was a very enjoyable day - just shows you can never tell what the conditions are going to be like until you get there!  Thanks to Joe for organising the Fly-in and Fred for the coffee...excellent.

I'll bring a bungee in case the wind is light.  Anybody with tow hooks?

Me too.  Had some great flying last Saturday at Kilakee.  Wind directly on the slope and huge lift.  First flight of the Sagitta.  Jim flew his ASW.

Slope Sites in Ireland / wind from S
« on: April 19, 2007, 22:38:32 PM »
Hi Cris,

I think we met last weekend at the Glencree slope and enjoyed that nice southeasterly breeze.  If the wind is due south, the Glencree slope will not work so well unless you walk up to the steep slope above the lake.  In the past we have driven further south past Sally Gap on the old miltary road and there is a low gradient south-facing slope there that works OK.  However, I would not rule out being able to use Killakee - if the wind is even a little west of south, this can work.  We will probably meet there at c. 2.15 on Saturday afternoon and if it does not work, head further south.  Perhaps see you then.

Peter
