Slope Soaring / A Snowy expedition to Tounntine
« on: March 04, 2009, 22:43:30 PM »
Hi All,

We once again braved the icy peaks of Tounntine today. We took one look at the abismal weather today and said.."Nothing like a challenge". This is what greeted me at 7am as I went out to work..

hmmmm, need to built a model with Skis, if this global climate change is here to stay.
Anywho, we will not be put off by such minor obstacles as snow drifts and impending avalanche.
To the top....

We sat in the car talking shite and drinking tea for about an hour in a maelstrom of fog sleet ice snow wind rain cloud hail and more snow, until finally! a clearance was spotted on the horizon... Get some models together pronto!!

In true bonnington style we decided to make base camp at about 16000 feet. Just in case....

At last...almost ready to launch.

As if things were not challenging enough, I decided to do some photography while flying my Spirit100. one hand on the right stick one hand on the camera. one foot in a bog hole and one foot in a snow drift.. 8)

By now the apprachng storm was nearly on us again so time to land. Ger first as I was flyphotoing... Its a whole new dicipline.. F8Jpeg I think its called.

Down Safe....But who is watching my model? which is by now slowly drifting down wind in a strengthening gale

Ended up having to land the model out of sight way down wind of us. Luckily it found a soft spot.  :D

Unfortunatley this spot was about 300feet down the side of the hill. So a lonely uphill hike in a blizzard ended the afternoons flying.

Are we mad or just plain mad. Still it beats workin!!
Hope my phone camera shots are good enough to view.
Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes

Cheers

Froze our proverbials off but well worth it. :)    It got our 2009 season off to a great start. Even if it took us untill Feb to get up there. Hope its a good year for slope soarin.

Park Flyers / Foamies / Voodoo up a tree
« on: September 12, 2008, 15:05:32 PM »
Here is a short tale of woe about my recent mishap with a P51 Voodoo Mustang park flyer from World Model ( do not ever buy this model)

There is a field beside my house suitable for park flyers. Hence my purchace of the Voodoo.
2 Weeks ago I was doing high speed low level straffing runs the full length of the field. Followed by a savage full up to vertical to narrowly avoid slamming into the trees at the end of the field. I had been doing this for a few weeks now and was getting right bloody cocky about it. This Particular eve I was out doing the same thing, (there is a rumour that I had a couple of beers at dinner time...but that is completely unfounded  ) So I pulled to vertical at the last minute, the setting sun blotted out the model and a sense of vertigo over whelmed me and SMASH!! right into the top of a tree. 200ft up!

There is stayed for the last 2 weeks or so, and last night I walked down to see if any miracles had befallen it, and lo and behold there it was on the ground  :D  Well actually in a ditch under about a foot of water.

It is my first true and total anihilation of a model. I do not think anything can be salvaged from this one.

Lesson here> If you put 400 quids worth of new electronics into a cheap piece of balsa and plastic, make sure that when you reach the stage where you are flying recklessly, because you think to yourself 'Sher I can put the gear into a better model if I crash' you factor in the tree and water hazard too  :?:

Slope Sites in Ireland / Slea Head Co Kerry
« on: September 11, 2008, 15:07:20 PM »
FYI

Slea head is great. A great view of the blasket islands as you fly out over the sound. Great lift! Landing is a little bit scary due to a lot of thorny scrub about but you can easily pick your spot to land. I thought it was great.

Slainte!!

How to... / Throttle cut on twin engines. Futaba 8U
« on: September 10, 2008, 23:18:06 PM »
Has anybody got the throttle cut function to work on a twin engine setup with a Futaba 8U or other transmitter?

I have mixed Ch3 to Ch6 for both engine throttles. But the cut function only works on ch3. Both channels are mixed and working fine. idle and full throttle working fine. Trims ok, I can cut both engines on the trim.

Is there something I am missing.

Any advise appreciated

Events / MACI Aerotow?
« on: September 10, 2008, 13:09:40 PM »
I got the hint from Ralpf and Joe that more gliding events at tounntine would be nice, ie between now and xmas. That got me thinking.

I see from the 2008 MACI Calendar of events that aerotow is not featured. Why?.... and Why the hell not. So if the interest is there in this I will put the idea to our fearless leader at the Carron Model Flying Club to host such an event. For 2009... some time??

We have two tugs available... 1/3 scale cub.. 12ft span.. Amazing model. I have put my 3.2m Pik20d up behind this. And our recently aquired Giant Stik by Great planes.. 40cc petrol. This thing has the power to tow a car up. One of the clubs 4m fox (of which there are 3) recently went up behind this one. I hope to do the same myself some day soon with my own fox. I am slowly working up the courage to do so.

Anyway this post is just mooting the idea, to guage the interest.

Cheers

Slope Soaring / Thanks for a great day out!
« on: September 09, 2008, 13:33:19 PM »
Hello,

Just a quick note to say we had a very enjoyable day out at Mt Leinster last sunday. Poxy with the weather too. I met a couple of you before at the MACI glide in on Tounntine this year so it was nice to see you again.
Thank you Joe for the big welcome! Hope the ASH repairs quickly.

Anybody that I have not met, I am David Mc Caffrey..Ex Shannon Club now flying at Carron. Co Tipp. I fly a lot at tounntine, practically live at the foot of it. Lucky me! So any of you ever in the locality make sure you have a model in the car and give either me or Ger Buckley the heads up and we will join you.

cheers
D.
