Monkey Swinger 48''
« on: May 15, 2009, 17:35:12 PM »
Ok here it goes.

I was in Portugal for some days and had no glider with me.... lots of wind, places to fly and no glider.
Star searching on forums for something nice to build.

And saw the following on RCGroups that caught my attention, build with simple depron and it seemed to perform well.

http://team-monkey.zoar.co.uk/
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=885150

Is something similar to a Wasabi, le fish, voltij and some other.
They are using it for VTPR that was something i found very recently and i was completely amazed.
Some like to fly up high i prefer to have the plane closer and see what he is doing so this is perfect for me. Ok i lack the skills to do all the maneuvers but that come with time and help.

So i had several 3mm and 6mm depron sheets getting dust, brand new 5gr servos that i don't want to use on other models so it was the perfect project.

Started by printing the A0 plans, tried first the tiled A4 but they were not ok.
Cutted the parts and... post-poned the assembly to my return to Dublin.
I didn't want to leave it there so i pack all the parts and they travelled with me in the bag!
Choosing between a extra pair of trousers or parts to build a glider what you do choose? :)

I'll post some photos later on.

Hey hey!! well done Nando

Interesting looking design. Will you be bringing it to the fly-in? (When we've established which weekend it will be) I can't tell from your picture what the wing profile is but with full length ailerons you should be able to throw it about the sky quite a lot  Has it got rudder control?

Stick your flight cam on it!

Excellent!

Hi,

The profile is made by a wood spar that runs all the way from one tip to the other of the wing. I had one done but it didn't fit the bag and i didn't wanted to cut it in half. Not sure of the profile name.

It's flat on top and tappered on the bottom.

Yes it has rudder control.

Here it goes some updates.

As it traveled inside the bag i had to perform some things to secure it.
Glued to a ply board, to make all parts stay in place.

All weak parts arrived ok, but the it turns out one of the wing part got damaged. :(
As it will all be covered in tape i hope it doesn't loose too much strenght there or maybe i can fill that with something later.

All the parts:

Starting to glue them.

That's all for now.

Hey,………..way to go, maestro!

Didn’t know you were building a Fish. Looks a Lota fun. :D

Give you a tip Dennis, (If you don’t already know it). If you want to do rolls safely………………gain a fair bit of height, put the model into a steep dive, (to gain speed) level off and then do a roll! Once you’ve done that, try the next step……

For the moment that the plane is up-side-down push  the elevator stick forward, it will reduce the amount of height that the plane looses while it’s inverted.  So,....... as the plane becomes inverted, it’s just a quick push on the stick and then let the elevator return to it’s neutral  position.

Of course, once you can do that, it’s not a million miles away from flying the plane up side down for a longer period of time . :D

Great fun! I call it “Smiley Flying” (It puts a grin on you face when you’ve done it! )

No problem DennisZ.

Really liked to see that Le Fish clone. :)

How big is it? Seems slightly bigger than my Monkey... that btw has been stopped. :(
Time runs short again... but i started working on it again yesterday if I'm fast i may finish it today.
I'll post some photos soon on the progress.

Hey Dennis How are you getting on with your Fish?

I’ve been thinking about getting one of around 66” span. I know there is a place in the States that sells them but I can’t find anywhere in Europe. :!:

Where did you get your’s from?

Hi Keith,

are you talking about Monkey Swinger ?
I built it myself , the plan is here - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=917643.

Unfortunately, she made one very steep dive and met the Earth ... :(
survived radio gear went to miniWasabi - the one I've tested on Big L.

As for the big Wasabi, the build is on hold till next season .... (have to pay 2k to Exchequer ... did I mentioned I will be an Irish National from next Friday).
