ISR Glide-In Info
« Reply #17 on: June 08, 2007, 13:59:10 PM »
Some long overdue info for the Glide-in Sunday 17th June at Mt Leinster.
We will meet at Nine Stones at 10am.See the map below. There is a car park here and a gate that leads up to the RTE mast.

The north slope is here at nine stones and very easy to access. The west slope is on the road to Nine Stones, so access here is very easy too. The south slopes are a little more work to get to. They involve a trek up the road to the mast. We don't have a key for the gate (working on it).We might be able to slip in with some of the Paraglider/hang-glider guys if they are there and drive up. If not, we have a quad and a trailer to shuttle people up and save a bit of a walk!

We don't have a lot in the way of east slopes a Mt Leinster.North-east is great on the north slope. Directly east is a problem. There are sites by the sea, thats a bit of a drive though!

In case the wind is light we would suggest bringing electric planes/gliders just in case!

The map shows directions from Bunclody. It is also possible to get to Nine Stones from Borris (south-west of ML).This would probably be a better option for those of you coming from the south-west. I'm sure there are signposts from Borris!

Look forward to see you all.

Finger crossed for suitable weather

Hi Ralph, Hi everyone,

Well, so far, the forecast for Sunday is no rain, cloud cover, but light wind...

Bring some electric models just in case !

After that, for the weather the day of the event, before you go, you can give me a call (or Joe) and we will update you on the weather conditions.
A more detailled forecast will be available tomorrow.

To postpone, that will be a bit short notice, but I know that some of you guys are crazy enough to fly under the rain !  :D

Fred, I assume that is Windguru?  If so, it is a coastal (surfing/windsurfing) resource only, so I was wondering, which spot location do you use for Mt. Leinster?

Chris

who doesn't mind flying under the rain, but won't fly in the rain!

I'll bring a bungee in case the wind is light.  Anybody with tow hooks?

Weather not looking too bad at the moment. The wind is going to be light unfortunately and direction seems to vary from weather site to site.We will have to wait and see how it turns out!
Will post again tomorrow evening (saturday) with a bit more of a definite forecast.
Keep an eye on here for an update or call/txt myself or fred.
My number is 086 6032598

Hello there,

Some bad news on the wind front for tomorrow's meeting !
So far, the forecast is a 5 km/h south east wind for Mt Leinster.

Very light wind and nit the best direction !

For those of you who are coming from far away, I don't think the day will worth the trip as this is not sure that we can fly other things than electric planes/gliders...

But no worries, we will organise another event later this year (summer).

We will still be with Joe at the slope tomorrow morning with cakes and coffee. I'll bring electric planes and light gliders and try to have some flying :D

Yup, looks like the wind will be very light indeed Fred. The website I use www.xcweather.co.uk says it will come from the northwest up untill 10am and then it will swithch around to southeast from then on.  :(  :( . Not sure I'll be able to make it anyway, not feeling well. I'll have to wait and see.

I'm finally back to the office ! Forgot the camera, so pictures tomorrow !
Now, about the meeting...

Well, I can say that was a dream day for Peter !  :D
Finally, the weather was not bad at all. we even had some decent wind at time, and sun !

Peter flew all day with his F3J type gliders, Joe flew his electric glider to show us the lifts, then flew pure glider, Anthony had a great time practicing flights over and over with his Daisy, and for me, I flew the nano Floh at the start of the day to finish with the EasyGlider (ok, not to mention 2 catastrophic launches with the Destiny... The lead moved backward on a previous landing... But just to say that the weather was decent enough to launch the Destiny).

And between glider flights, and to entertain the crowded, we had some flights (and some close calls too  :P ) with Joe's Acromaster and my Formosa.

Overall, I think we were really lucky, as all the forecast shown a bad day for slope soaring.

We've also decided to organise another glide-in day later this summer...

That was a very enjoyable day - just shows you can never tell what the conditions are going to be like until you get there!  Thanks to Joe for organising the Fly-in and Fred for the coffee...excellent.
