Thanks for a great day out!
« on: September 09, 2008, 13:33:19 PM »
Hello,

Just a quick note to say we had a very enjoyable day out at Mt Leinster last sunday. Poxy with the weather too. I met a couple of you before at the MACI glide in on Tounntine this year so it was nice to see you again.
Thank you Joe for the big welcome! Hope the ASH repairs quickly.

Anybody that I have not met, I am David Mc Caffrey..Ex Shannon Club now flying at Carron. Co Tipp. I fly a lot at tounntine, practically live at the foot of it. Lucky me! So any of you ever in the locality make sure you have a model in the car and give either me or Ger Buckley the heads up and we will join you.

cheers
D.

Dave,

Thanks again for changing crystals last thing on Sunday as the wind died - allowed me to get a last flight in!   A very enjoyable days flying - it would be a pity to wait until next year to do it all again so hopefully we can get some more meetings/road trips organised.

No Prob Peter, anytime.
Yeah I would love to get you guys down to tounntine before the year is out.
I suppose we could just put out the invite and set a date. Take it from there.

Cheers,
D.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to sound like the ignorant fool that I am  :( but where is Tounntine?
I've searched Google and Google Earth, and they give no results.
None at all

Hi Ron,

Tounntine is the name of the slope at Ballina Co. Tipperary. Myself Ger Buckley and a group of the SMFC glider guys fly here regularily. It was also the spot where the MACI Glide in 2008 was held.

Here is a pic

Thanks Dave.

Ah that's the other side of the river from Killaloe?
Guess you fly from those hills to the... errr... north east?
Just trying to get some 'pins' stuck in Google Earth for flying sites.

For some reason I've got Midleton Model Flying Club marked not far away.
Is that you?
Must have got some co-ordinates from a club list somewhere, probably MACI.
And it was probably just a club contact's address/location.

Hi Ron,

Have you not been to tounntine yet? That will have to be remedied if so.

The slope works in all wind directions with the exception of East or NE. But there is a slope called Pipers on the Killaloo side of the lake which works for these wind directions. Basically at Killaloo/Ballina no matter what the wind we can fly.

I am a member of the Carron Club in Co.Tipp. Middleton would be a good bit down from us. On the map Tounntine is at the most southerlt tip of Lough Derg on the River Shannon... so you can pin that one in.

Luckily I live in Castleconnell just a little further down the river from here so the slope is a 20min drive from my house. Hence my 4 bed house got swiftly converted into a 3 bed house with one room jammed with model gliders etc...

Cheers
