Slope Soaring / Anyone know what this is?
« on: September 29, 2015, 22:33:56 PM »
A friend of mine, (yes I have got one or two you know) has sent me these pictures of a glider he acquired about a year ago.

He says it's very old and wonders if it will still work. I pointed out that I'm very old yet I still work, well most parts of me do,......some parts take a little longer to work these days but now I'm getting way off topic.

My friend, his name is Rob, tells me that the flaps don't just deploy downwards like most flaps do. They kind of rotate through 90 degrees so that when deployed they stick above and below the trailing edge of the wing. It also has a all moving elevator in a rather high position near the top if the fin.

All in all a strange configuration,......anyone have any idea what model it is?

Misc / Parts for foam cutter
« on: September 24, 2015, 17:20:32 PM »
I've been asked by a friend of mine if anyone on the forum knows where to get the necessary parts to make a foam cutter.

When I say foam cutter I don't mean the type where a hot wire it tethered at one end. I'm talking about the type where the wire is attached to a pair of moving  vertical arms which are computer controlled in both the X and Y axis.

Slope Soaring / The Autumn Glide-In 2015
« on: September 20, 2015, 19:21:50 PM »
Okay, Okay, Okay,.......so who's up for next weekend then? Taking a mean average of the present weather forecasts, Saturday looks as though we'll be on the south, or possibly the west slope with 10 – 15Kph winds, broken cloud/sun and about 10 – 12 degrees C of temp.
Sunday looks almost certain to be the south slope with winds up to around 25 – 30 kph and similar temperatures but slightly more overcast.

So, nothing too strong in terms of wind, not too cold, and so far no rain forecast for either day. 8)
A nice autumn weekend I'd say.

The only question remains, who's coming?  :?: So come on lads, “Sound Off” as our cousins across the Atlantic would say.

Slope Soaring / Sunday 19th july 2015
« on: July 19, 2015, 18:38:52 PM »
So herself wanted to go to Kilkenny town, I wanted to go flying. We decided on a compromise. We'd drive up the Big L first, then on to Kilkenny for lunch! Seemed like a plan.

There were hundreds, and I mean hundreds, of bloody cyclists trying to cycle up the narrow twisty lane to Nine Stones car park. No sooner had we squeezed past one than we were stuck behind another. The car engine was getting hot, the clutch was getting hot, and I was getting hot and frustrated trying to get past all these slow, wobbling cyclists. I'm telling you lads, it was bloody dangerous.

Anyway, half an hour latter than anticipated we arrived at the west slope. There was a very slight 'nip' in the breeze that was coming from a little south of due west. Wind speed?...about 20 – 30 kph. With Mandy in the car I felt I could only take one model with us otherwise it becomes a little uncomfortable for the passenger, so the famous (or should that read infamous) Phase 6 was duly pressed into service.

You know, for all the knocks, scrapes and “repairs” she's had she still flys well. (The Phase 6 I mean.) With the sun high and behind me the little blue and white model put in a pretty good show for itself. She, (Mandy) even managed to take a couple of snaps for the record.

Here's the P6 coming in for a low pass,.......bless her.

And her she's coming in to land.......

After an hour or so the wind turned further to the south which made the flying that bit more difficult so the P6 was landed and packed away. 30 minutes or so later and we were eating lunch in a little restaurant near the centre of Kilkenny. After which we inspected the local retail establishments for such important items as shoes, handbags, floral dresses and anything else that might (or might not) get worn before being given to the charity shops on the basis that it's no longer in fashion. Well, it keeps them happy doesn't it!

So all in all, quite a satisfying day. Anyone else been up to anything this weekend?

Misceleanous / I like to get up close and personal
« on: June 24, 2015, 23:21:24 PM »
I’ve fallen in love with many ladies in my time. Most were too rich, famous or aloof to even notice me :(
.
However, on a recent holiday I managed to get very up close and personal with an icon of mine. :D Like me, she’s getting on in years   although at over 70 she looked,……just gorgeous.

As I walked up to greet her I got shivers down my spine, goose bumps up my arms, and my throat became too tight to speak. She still sounded great to my ears, at least until the cross wind blew her voice away.

She wasn’t feeling very well at first, but after her nurses administered a little TLC she was back in fine form.

Slope Soaring / A pleasent afternoons flying (11/4/2015)
« on: April 11, 2015, 17:42:13 PM »
I said to my misses that as the wind was west-ish I might take myself off to the mountain for a flight this afternoon. Big Keith couldn’t make it today but I got a call from David Wilson aka “Angry_Muppet” and we agreed to meet up on the Big L at 1pm.

It was quite chilly on the west slope when I arrived and the wind was slightly south of west. Knowing that David was brining his powered combat wing I took my Skua to fly.

David set about fitting a pusher prop to his wing………

It was a good job his wing had a bit of thrust as it would have been too light to fly in the very gusty winds that were strong enough to push me backwards sometimes. Once out into the lift however the motor could be completely shut off as David enjoyed the delights of glider flight.
Not to be outdone I added some ballast to my Skua and she too took off out over the valley.

All was great until David seemed to become caught in a bit of turbulence and his wing spiralled into the ground. When he hadn’t returned for what seemed quite a while I landed my model and walked off down the slope to join the hunt for his elusive wing. We both walked, and walked,…and walked. Up, down and sideways all around that slope but couldn’t find it. (Do you remember that feeling Big K?) Finally, by operating the Tx controls and listening hard David caught sound of the wing and followed his ears. Bingo!

By now we had become a little weary, walking up / down the slope in all our wind proof gear, so we decided to retire to the parking area for refreshments. David produced cups, hot water, tea bags and milk. But had forgotten the sugar, nor had he brought any spoons. He’s got a lot to learn about slope soaring that lad! Dipping your figures into nearly boiling water to remove a tea bag is so uncouth!…to say nothing of painful!!
While David was fiddling about trying to recharge his Li-Po I sat down by the car. All that searching for the model had quite worn me out. The sun started to shine and it felt warm in all my gear. My eyes felt heavy,…..and heavier …..and heavier………. So David, the cruel bastard that he is, snapped this rather unflattering shot of me. I was only resting my eyes!

After being roused from what had been a very pleasant afternoon doze, we enjoyed some more flying. The wind was getting lighter and turning more to the south.
Not content with all the searching he had done earlier, David again seemed to loose control of his model and again had to retrieve it. Here he is going off on another “walk of shame.”. Don’t worry Dave, we’ve all done it many, many, many times. It goes with the territory.

Eventually the motor mount on David’s wing started to come loose and it was decided to call it a day as the wind was going further towards the south and producing an ever narrower corridor of lift. We packed our gear away and bid each other farewell.
It had been a pleasant afternoons flying. A good start to the new season.

Well this is the best image of the eclipse I could get. Before the sky clouded over  . Taken just before 09.00 this morning. (maxima was around 09.30.)

Anyone get any better images?

Slope Soaring / Flying on the 8th March 2015
« on: March 08, 2015, 22:49:40 PM »
I thought it would be nice to ‘engage with the elements’ and utilize the westerly’s that were blowing over Mt Lienster today. :D  It didn’t seem too windy at my house so I imagined  a couple of hours gently floating around over the slope.

Arrived at the mountain about 11.45 and noticed that the trees were bending a little more than I ‘d expected. :?:  Stuck my head out of the car and decided it was bloody windy, to say nothing of being a bit chilly as well  . First task,….. don the insulated windproof gear.

Second task, assemble the Phase 6. And that’s when things started going wrong. Let me tell you that I had flown the P6 last week without any problems at all. But today I noticed during the pre flight checks that the ailerons and flaps where not in the correct neutral position. They were all deflected down 10 -15 mm. And the crow brake operation wasn’t correct either. Instead of the ailerons deflecting upwards as spoilerons, they were moving in the opposite direction, (same as the flaps.) I switched the Tx off and on again,….no difference. Turned the RX on / off,…no difference. :!:  OH Boll*x!
Conclusion?….the mixes for the P6 had become scrambled…I dismantled the model and put it back in the car.

Fortunately I’d also taken the Solange with me as back up………but it seemed too windy to launch it. :(

Just when I’d thought that nothing else could go wrong with my day, Big Keith turning up. (Oh, don’t start crying BK……..I’m only joking  ). He had bought his V tail which, upon assembly was found to have a stripped aileron servo…..and was un-flyable. Fortunately he too had bought a back up model. The indomitable Zagi.
He then insisted that I at least try launching my Solange, to the point of threatening to commit unspeakable acts of a sexual nature upon my personage if I didn’t.
(At this point I did think of disassembling the Solange and putting it back in the car in the hopes that Keith might carry out his threat, but then decided it was too cold for those sort of shenanigans) .

We walked to the ridge and by holding the Solange by its very small belly pan and supporting the rear of the fuse on my head, (because the belly pan is too small to get enough grip to hold the entire model in those strong winds,) I managed to launch her. Although the sub fin whacked the back of my head at it took off. Big Keith’s Zagi followed her out into the lift.

We must have flown for some twenty minutes or more before landing for a break. We turned around and there was Niall Agnew. (Hope I’ve spelt that right) I didn’t recognize him at first, (he’s got younger looking since I last saw him). It wasn’t until he took his Weezle out of his car that I remembered him. He’d come well prepared because he had a another combat wing, (looked very much like a Zagi), an Easy Glider and a Blade mouldy all stashed away within his car. Talk about coming prepared! 8)

The flying and chatting continued followed by cups of tea provided by B Keith, (He’s not such a bad chap actually) followed by a little further flying.

As the afternoon wore on the wind strength dropped somewhat and as the sun continued to shine the temperature rose noticeably. Eventually after a couple of hours Niall packed his models away and bid us farewell promising to return when he could.

Between you and me I’m hoping he doesn’t make it back too soon. Do you know this guy was landing every one of his models at his feet! In fact he very nearly caught one model before it just missed his hand and, again, landed by his shoe. So while Big Keith and I were embarking on two day camel rides to retrieve our models, Niall was just landing his, then bending down, picking them up,  and launching them again! (Flash bastard. )

It was a very enjoyable day today. Good flying with good company. What more could you want on a Sunday afternoon?

This is young Niall armed with his combat wing.

Before we could fly I had to clear my harem (of sheep) off the Landiing Zone

Slope Soaring / First Glide In of the season (14-!5 March)
« on: March 03, 2015, 19:34:57 PM »
Cor-blimey the first glide-in of the season is less than two weeks away!  That seems to have come round suddenly. And this is the Bring-and-Buy Glide-In isn’t it?

So who’s up for a trip to the Big L then? I was expecting to make it but it seems we have some visitors arriving from the deepest depths of England. (Everyone sighs with relief  ) So I expect there’ll be a bumper turnout on the mountain this time as I won’t be there to annoy you. (Please say you'll miss me  )

Who's up for it then?

Misceleanous / Close encounters of the R.A.F. kind
« on: February 07, 2015, 07:28:10 AM »
I read this article on the BBC News web site this morning

"An RAF training plane had to take evasive action when it ventured in to airspace used by a Cambridgeshire model flying club last year.
A UK Airprox Board report labelled the incident "high severity" after the trainer flew within 40ft (12m) of a remote-controlled model aircraft.
The near-miss happened 600ft (180m) above the village of Northborough near Peterborough.
The board said the "safety of the aircraft may have been compromised".
A report just published said the planes were flying on 4 February 2014 in airspace permitted for use by a local model aircraft flying club.
'Safety reduced'
The model's operator thought his plane was flying at up to 150ft (45m), but the trainer, from RAF Wyton near Huntingdon, confirmed it had been flying above it at one point at 600ft.
The Airprox Board report concluded "safety margins had been much reduced".
The board suggested because nearby RAF Wittering had changed to a non-flying base users of the airspace had become less aware of dangers.
It said all operators in the area needed to be alert to each other's activities.
The Ministry of Defence said RAF Wittering had since returned to flying status"

For Sale / 89” clipped wing Cub for auction
« on: February 05, 2015, 16:30:00 PM »
Eight or Nine years ago I watched this “Clipped Wing” Cub flying in the skies over Ferns, Co. Wexford. It flew very well until it experienced a mid air collision with another model which damaged the tail of the Cub causing it to crash.
The owner of the Cub offered the airframe to me, with a new tail, (which he just happened to have lying in his garage strangely enough,) as I had an interest in Scale models at that time.
In reality my interest in things ‘Scale’ was only fleeting and I never did anything with this airframe. It has sat in my garage loft ever since.
The previous owner used a 25cc Zenoa two stroke engine on it which gave the model power-a-plenty

Although I doubt this model will ever win any scale awards again it wouldn’t take too much effort to return it to flying order. It doesn’t have any servos or electronics in it, it’s just the airframe (The new tail will graft straight onto to the fuse.) I though it could make a useful glider tug. :?:  However that was 8 or more years ago and the time has come for it to go. If no one wants it, it‘ll be cremated.

It’s for sale by auction. All bids to be posted on this forum and all proceeds will go to charity. Highest bidder wins of course and the auction will end at midnight on Saturday 28th February.

So gentlemen,.......what am I bid???

Misceleanous / Diamond Tape
« on: November 20, 2014, 22:31:09 PM »
As most of you will know by now, Sellotape are no longer producing “Diamond” hinge tape. :(

This is the only type of hinging that I use because it’s easy, (suits me) quick, (just like me) and makes for a completely draught proof hinged joint.  I’ve just finished my last roll of the stuff.

However  ! This company still has some, :D  so hurry, hurry, hurry and get some while you can. I’ve ordered two rolls, coz I’m greedy! :P
