Wanted / Set of wings
« on: May 28, 2014, 23:26:08 PM »
Hi all,

I'm working on an idea and want a set of wings if you have any that are minus a fuse and need a home, the cord needs to be between 160mm and 250mm and overall span 2m plus. Balsa build up wing or foam core

Covered or not covered doesn't matter but in ok repair, I don't mind some superficial damage but no warping or bags on kindling either. Thanks

How to... / Bungee Launch
« on: May 26, 2014, 22:17:07 PM »
Hi Bill,

Would you have a steer on the size of the chute? It looks small in the video ie not big enough to cause a drag on the launch?

How to... / Bungee Launch
« on: May 26, 2014, 13:47:22 PM »
Hi All,

I was speaking to the lads on the slope yesterday about using a bungee launcher for flat field launching.... I've had a look on line and most people are advising building a frame and a pedal release for a 20 foot long bungee with nylon tied to the end of the bungee for hooking onto the plane.... Any advice lads? What do you do for this type of launching?

Slope Soaring / Ireland visit this spring
« on: May 26, 2014, 13:40:58 PM »
Well yesterday started out as one of those days that we (Tom and I) weren't expecting a whole lot. We figured we'd travel to Big L for the chat and the catch up not thinking the weather would play ball and allow us to fly..... as we arrived at the slope we couldn't see past the nine stones car park barrier... so our expectations were confirmed.....

The lads arrived up twenty minutes later and like as though they had arranged it, the humidity (not "cloud" as Fred explained) lifted, and we could see the beautiful valley rolled out in front of us....

Some experienced flyers took to the sky, with no wind to speak of. Tom and I said we'd have a go with his new baby skua wing.... well the Skua didn't play ball, that coupled with no wind and inexperience and we were packing it away.... until Ralph offered some advice..... well the next thirty minutes was a steep learning curve after which the skua took to the skies and we had a great time.... pretty much zero wind but she flew and both myself and Tom had a cracking day..... we learned the art of "starching" around for some lift and really enjoyed the few hours....

Tom the little jammy @&*% took ownership of another plane from JP's collection and was simply beside himself with it.... the BD5 has take pride of place in his bedroom.... and an order for a trany was duly requested for his birthday next month....

Massive, Massive thanks to Ralph, JP and Fred for the advice and help yesterday..... very much appreciated lads thank you from Tom and I.... Selleri.. good to meet you and shake the hand of a true gent.... thanks for coming all this way...

Thanks for the response on this lads. The photo's enclosed show the curve. Its very extreme really I'd imagine its just my technique.

Let me know your thoughts.

The wing is from a WOT4

How to... / Compound curves
« on: April 24, 2014, 00:24:31 AM »
All,

I'm struggling to get a decent finish on wing tips with compound curves when using oracover.

I've looked up videos on line and read lots but just can't seem to master it.. The technique I'm using is to use a heat gun to stretch the cover over the curve. The challenge is that I continually get creases in the finish and if I go too long with heat gun it crisps up as it's too hot.... The iron approach isn't much better..... Any of you experienced flyers have any advice??

Thanks

Electrics / Be mindful

Hi All,

Had a bad experience there recently. Managed to blow a receiver with a faulty ESC, the 'red brick' model of ESC, from turnigy, are cheap but there can be a sting in the tail. There seems to be a fault with these units, (reported online by other users). The BEC goes faulty, with either zero volts out to the receiver or in my case the full voltage of the battery.

In my case, 14.8v blew the receiver with a little puff of smoke and the telling smell of toast  :x

Lesson learned, check the voltage output of the BEC connector with a multimeter before connecting to the receiver or indeed, don't buy cheap.......

Great weekend lads, thanks. The wind played ball big time. Enjoyed getting airborne again for a few hours. I must say a massive thanks for the help with finding the skua this morning when it hit the tress.

I took a lonely walk, with my young lad, Tom, into the forest hoping to spot the plane..... Within five minutes I had another five sets of eyes in the forest.... As Fred said.... "No one gets left behind" ..... Thankfully she was found in a few minutes...... Well as it fell out of the tree and almost split me... It kinda found me  :D

Don't worry Keith, I'll bring my DG1000 along, I'd love to maiden it tomorrow so I'll have lots and lots for you to keep your mind off not having a foamie..... and if you're very good.... I'll let you fly my skua..... but only if you're really good  :D
