Slope Soaring / Kilakee - 14th July
« on: July 15, 2021, 17:46:47 PM »
Some quick photos of our meet up last night in Kilakee.
Great to remove the cobwebs :)
Tons of chats, flying, and various emotions!

First, first flight of Andy's home made Jart. Looks like the trim launch, transformed itself into a first flight as the machine simply kept going! Looked very good in the air, not vicious at all, and it does look fast! Even on the ground :)
Nice looking machine all around. Maybe a tiny issue with the elevator incidence as it was flying slightly on its arse, but other than that, perfect. For a first, I don't think Andy could be happier as that thing is definitively a massive success!

Second emotion, is this time with my AVA, where on the second flight, after 10 minutes, decided to stop responding to orders, went into fail safe, and spiraled down very fast to the ground  :'( :'( Seeing the speed and the impact pattern, I was looking at retrieveing some small AVA pieces... But! There must be a God somewhere as it crashed on a very very soft spot of high grass down the slope! Other than my wing tip unglued (in fairness, was already broken!), not a scratch!! Nothing! Like new! Peter who came down with me (thanks Peter!!) was as surprised as me!
So it will live another day! I suspect an issue with the Powerbox BEC, so that thing is gone now, and new receiver ordered for good figure as I will not be that lucky twice!

We also met a nice modeler who was flying a Spitfire, and what looked like a small Pilatus B4 down the slope to us, but cam up when they were done to say hi :)

Anyway, I managed to get home just before 21.30... I slept well that night!!

Thanks Peter, Joe, Andy for showing up, hopefully more decent weather coming our way so we can do more of that flying thing!

Now, a few photos!

3D printers and 3D printing / New toy :) Creality Ender 3Pro
« on: May 24, 2021, 18:19:34 PM »
Just to have something bigger than my trusty printer.

So went for the Ender 3 Pro, and I hope that it will be as good as my current Malyan one :)

Printing size is 20x20x25, good for the odd big job.
Came in a small box, then it’s a big meccano. Took me an hour to assemble taking my time, I’m sure it could be done easily in half that time, even less!

Nice feature is the magnetic bed. Handy to remove the printed parts.

After the all important calibration, first print went like a breeze, so fingers crossed all set and reliable from now on :)

3D printers and 3D printing / Tow hooks
« on: April 25, 2021, 17:54:13 PM »
Alright so, new prints, and I have to say, nicely surprised!

Printed glider tow hooks, in various sizes from 6 to 12 mm, and they are brilliant! Tested one and tried to break it, but couldn’t! Once glued in a nose, they looks to be indestructible!

As usual, went mad and printed a stock of them of all sizes, very happy!

They are the kind, like the Mpx ones if you see what I mean, for a piano wire diameter from 0.8mm for the smallest one to 2mm for the big ones.

Slope Soaring / Straight from the archives! The year is 2003!
« on: April 06, 2021, 12:40:41 PM »
OOhhh, look what I found! My first photos of slope soaring in Ireland. We were young :)
Some people in them I haven't seen in years!

A mix from the first time I met fellow modelers in Dublin (mix of North and Westerly slope) and my very first trip to Kinsale

Slope Soaring / Slope soaring diorama
« on: February 21, 2021, 18:02:07 PM »
Alright so, with the bad weather we had on Saturday, had to keep busy! While looking at finally do my 1/72 scale SG38 diorama, found my Notch aeromodeller set! Time to make a slope diorama!
Base is made of polystyrene foam. Grass is a Notch Matt. Nothing fancy, quick and easy!
Less is more in that case, I think I managed to translate the slope atmosphere a bit.

Hope you like it :)

Slope Soaring / Say NO! to the project of a windfarm in Mount Leinster
« on: February 10, 2021, 08:29:18 AM »
Hi all,

Please, go, and sign the below!!

https://my.uplift.ie/petitions/save-mount-leinster-from-industrial-development-1

We will lose the Westerly car park (at least, and for a start!)

Get everybody you know to sign this petition. More info/update as it comes.

The story:

https://savemountleinster.com/

Plans to construct a wind farm consisting of seven 178-metre wind turbines on the slopes of Mount Leinster have been described as “an invasion” that will destroy an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Coillte has announced its intention to apply for planning permission to develop a wind farm at Croaghaun Hill south of the villages of Myshall and Kildavin on the foothills of the Blackstairs. The wind farm will consist of up to seven wind turbines with a maximum overall blade tip height of 178m within the townlands of Rossacura, Cranemore, Kilbranish North, Bealalaw, Raheenleigh and Aclare.

Coillte is expected to lodge a planning application to Carlow County Council in the coming weeks, giving the public five weeks to make a submission.

The proposed application has taken many in the community by complete surprise and prompted the immediate formation of the Save Mount Leinster campaign. An online petition has also started, appealing to Co Carlow’s public representatives to ‘collaborate in order to save Mt Leinster and the Blackstairs’. The petition has already garnered over 2,000 signatures.

It is understood that in late 2019, only residents within two kilometres of the proposed site were contacted by Coillte about the proposed wind farm. Covid-19 restrictions meant that Coillte’s proposed community workshops were postponed, but a website, croaghaunwindfarm.ie, subsequently went live at the end of November.

On the website, Coillte states that it remains committed to keeping the public informed about the progress of the project as it continues to work towards a planning application in December 2020. ‘We are now actively working to find new and innovative engagement solutions to provide you with the best possible access to timely project updates as they become available, in case these restrictions are extended further over the coming weeks and months,’ the website states.

However, many residents believe the public consultation has been inadequate.

“People have been shocked and appalled; there has been inadequate public consultation about this wind farm proposal and the majority of the local community are unaware of it,” stated Cornelia Lucey, who lives in Kilbranish, about six kilometres from the proposed site.

“This is an area the community have worked hard to protect and celebrate, an area of outstanding beauty. We don’t want to be a protest group, but any development there should be community-led with an appropriate scale, appropriate size, appropriate ownership … this feels like an invasion,” she added.

Ms Lucey pointed out that a proposed height of 178m is actually three times taller than any existing turbine in the southeast, a scale that is normally placed offshore.

“I’m almost underneath this proposed wind farm and I have to say I’m very much against it,” stated Niall Toner from Coolasneachta, Myshall. “The way technology is going, wind farms of the technology they are proposing are becoming out of date; in Denmark and Sweden they are getting rid of this model,” he stated.

Mr Toner also questioned locating a wind farm of this scale in an area of special conservation and what he called the “lack of transparency and honesty” around this proposal.

“I fully understand that Ireland is moving in a greener direction and this isn’t about a ‘not in my back yard’ attitude, but why aren’t we looking at alternatives?” he asked.

George Quirke, who lives in Killoughternane, also stressed that this wasn’t about “pushing the trouble onto someone else.

“We shouldn’t really be looking at how to create more energy, but how we use the energy we already have,” he said.

“I just feel at a time when people need nature more than ever, why are we going to take away another area of nature, a place of real beauty?

“With something like this, local people should have a huge say in it, a huge say on what’s in their own community,” said Mr Quirke.

Rachel Pilkington, actor and environmentalist, stated that she was “completely shocked” to hear about the proposal.

“Turbines of that size have no place on a mountainside anywhere in Ireland. The Blackstairs is an area of outstanding natural beauty with glorious panoramic views and it’s somewhere that I feel a great personal affinity to,” she said.

“There will be a massive backlash if planning is approved for this, as it would be detrimental to the health of the land and ecology up there,” added Ms Pilkington.

Sports / E-whisky from CD-Design
« on: January 17, 2021, 18:32:47 PM »
First build of the year!! :)
An e-Whisky from a French company, CD Design in the Bourgogne region :) design is from the 80s, from famous Jean Louis Coussot, my master!!

This is a 1/2a model simple build.
Kit came safely packed and include everything you need to do the build. Of course, I had to change a few things to my liking, but more on that at we go. Build time is 8hts, 4hrs build, and I spent another 4 doing the finishing, so not a lot of time really.

I started the build with the wings. Really straight forward. The notches in the TE and LE were going to be a massive pain, until I found out that my camping knife is the exact width! So 2 minutes later, notches done. Real easy! Here are a bunch of photos.

3D printers and 3D printing / Pilot harnesses
« on: January 17, 2021, 12:55:32 PM »
Yyeeaaa, received my grey PLA and fabric tape :)

The tape is fine for 1/4 scale, but my 1/3 scale one is too small :( so time to order more! But could not resist putting a 1/4 scale one together. Really happy with the results and will go nicely on my scale pilots and seats :)

As for colors, I have light brown, red, grey and black, so that should cover a wide range of eras. More buckles types are on the works :)
