Slope Soaring / Fiu - A Lightweight Slope Wing
« on: December 03, 2009, 19:24:31 PM »
Decided I needed an agile lightweight slope model as the last couple of slope trips have been in <10mph winds. Found the Fiu at www.jivaro.org aame place as the Madslide

The pic below is 3 hours work. Just releasing the ailerons, covering and RC install and it's done

Scale / Astir CS Mould Build
« on: November 01, 2009, 16:47:43 PM »
As we didn't get to fly today, I've been doing a bit of surfing, (wet enough on the bloody hill to surf!). Came across this Spanish site with a photo montage of building a  mould for an Astir CS

Enjoy  :D  :D

Slope Soaring / Some older Pictures - late 80's
« on: October 23, 2009, 19:40:14 PM »
Came across a few pics that I thought might interest some;

This is one of the first places I flew a slope soarer from; Duart Point on the Isle of Mull. Mull is a great slope place. Slopes for every direction by simply driving across the Island!

A few pictures taken flying with the Clwyd Soaring Assoiciation above Horseshoe Pass, Llangollen, N. Wales. with Ray Jones and Vic Steele

PSS / SU25 Frogfoot
« on: October 13, 2009, 18:39:52 PM »
As the NIMSA boys will tell you, I NEVER have only one project on the go. Along with the Jart, I'll be building a PSS SU25 Frogfoot from the Griffiths & Briggs Plan. 44 in wingspan with foam wing and tail.

Pic of the plan

Plan called for 1/8 liteply formers. Didn't have any liteply so bagged some glass cloth front & back on 3/32. Should be more than strong enough!

To be continued...........

Slope Soaring / Jart from scratch
« on: September 24, 2009, 20:41:31 PM »
Most people will know of the Jart, but for those who don't check out;

http://www.jartworld.com/

Plans used to be free, but now are $10. I've had mine for a looooong time and only just getting round to building. The Jart is available to buy in a couple of versions, but being a tight Scotsman, I'm going to build from scratch.  Model has a glass fuz which I'm going to produce using the lost foam method. The best explanation I've seen of this can be found here: http://www.pjmodelclassics.be/ under Building Methods. Basically you shape the fuz in foam, glass over that and then melt out/remove the foam. The wing will be a standard vac bagged blue foam. The original is a one piece, but I'm going to make the wing removable for ease of transport.

Started tonight, by making templates for the fuz,

I then cut this from blue foam and shaped it before starting to cover it in strapping tape:

More to follow as it gets done

Thermal / Flat field / 20/09/09 Thermal/electric
« on: September 20, 2009, 17:41:25 PM »
Nimsa's final thermal event of the year ran today. Here's a copy of the results.

Low turnout for a variety of reasons, 5 in thermal and only 3 in electric. Conditions were very changeable with some quite severe wind gusts and very little thermal activity. Only one flight I can remember getting away in lift. Open was flown over 4 rounds of 8 minute duration with a discard. Electric was 3 rounds of 6 minutes, 15 seconds motor run (all models being used were brushless motored)

Results are:

Thermal: 1st Frank Jackson
              2nd Paul Freeman
              3rd Bob McIvor

Electric:   1st Paul Freeman
               2nd Sam Phenix
               3rd Frank Jackson

          Congratulations to Frank & Paul

Thermal / Flat field / NIMSA Thermal events
« on: August 04, 2009, 22:58:21 PM »
Thought i'd make the first post here;

I know it's a long way for most of you from the South, but NIMSA has a fulll programme of thermal events throughout the "Summer ?" months.

Full schedule on the events page at www.nimsa.co.uk.

Last Sunday was the Area Open Championships, 4 rounds of 8 minutes with a discard, followed by the top two scores having a 2 round fly off, which was closely fought. full results on the Nimsa website

DLG also seems to be taking off in the North, with quite a few people building the dl50 as a starter model. There are also a few blasters around as well as the odd o/d.

If anyone wants info on thermal events, drop me an e-mail
