So Big Keith and myself were flying our combat wings together on Big L today and suddenly we were accosted by a man who said he wanted to have a go at gliding aero models.
So we let him have a go, fully expecting him to crash and have a long walk to collect the model,……but he didn’t!  In fact he flew rather well for a first timer. 8)
So the man in question is Patrick O’Brien. (Pat) He was so in enthralled with the experience that when he got home he phoned me to say that he’s ordered a Zagi plus all the radio gear! (Is this guy serious or what!!! :D )(We like " serious flyers" on this forum :P )
So we now have yet another Big L local flyer to join our merry crew.
(I can remember a time when I would be the only person flying off the Big L apart from at glide-in’s. At this rate it’s gonna start getting crowded up there.)
So welcome to the party, Pat……Log into the forum and say ‘hello’.
Here's a picture from today. (I thought I'd put their names in, in case they forgot who they were  )

Welcome patrick

Welcome Pat, unfortunately you'll have to change your name to Keith so you can join the club, we'll have little keith, big keith and medium sized keith ;-)
-
Congrats on the new recruit!
What's that orange thingy called? :?:

Qnswer: A flying wing. Made of plastic foam with a couple of servos, battery and a rx you chuck it off the slope and it flys! :D …………….Er, sorry about that Selleri, ……….I couldn’t resist it!!!
It’s a Skua from a company in Oz called Wowings.
I’ve found that combat wings are the best things for newbie’s to have a go at flying because of their resilience to damage. So whenever someone new asks to ‘have a go’ I let them use my Skua. (I dial in lots of expo on the elevator control to make it less sensitive in pitch. )
Ever done any combat flying Selleri?

:D
Only with indoor depron planes (http://youtu.be/Z1IN7tmZybY?t=1h34m24s)!
Flew my mates wing when it was operational, just flat field flying at the time. When Clint Eastwood came over here to shot Flag of our Fathers few of the SFX guys were modellers and brought wings with them. My mate bought his from them, even had the right colour scheme! ;)
I've got this one (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=34072&aff=104285) coming soon, same as the Scout Bee from Windrider (http://windrider.com.hk/product.asp?id=165).

Is the one you're getting a pure glider or are you getting a power pack with it?
K.
-
Hmmmm, pure glider to begin with but if I want to do some of the sea side cliffs I'd better get a motor, it's a bit wet down there (https://vimeo.com/49278958) you see...

"Chicken!"

OH!!! SHIT! What happened? :?: Did the wind just drop? :!:
I’m sorry to have seen that Selleri.
-
The experts say I flew too far out... I might have to agree with them.
Plus lack of experience kept me from flying it closer to the cliff on the way down.

I like my swimming pools heated thank you! People who jump into the sea there usually wash up about 8-12 weeks later in another part of the country.

Here’s Patrick working hard to get his Zagi finished so he & I can go up the Big L tomorrow. :D He wasn’t too sure how to set it up so he ‘popped’ round to my workshop to see, if between us, we could get it airworthy.
I’ll let you know tomorrow if we succeeded or not.
You gonna join us (Big) Keith?

Workshop activities
Have fun today in Big L. and keep us posted! :D

For sure, it was a little bit chilly on the west slope of Mt. Lienster this morning, and despite the rest of the mountain being covered in cloud the west facing slope was clear, and for most of the time, bathed in very welcome sunshine.
Here is Patricks’ finished Zagi. Those winglets are very conspicuous when she is in flight. Useful for knowing which way up she is. And she certainly flew……….
It must be said that conditions were a little ‘challenging’ for a newbie today. Average wind speeds at the top of the slope were around 25Kph gusting to 50 - 60 K. in addition, underneath some of the surrounding cloud there was a fair bit of turbulence. But Hey! We slopers are made of hardy stuff. We can take it, can’t we. (Can’t we??? :? )
Well Patrick & I did anyway. Alas the new Zagi took a particularly hefty ‘crunch’ into the hill side and needed hospitalization, so the old and trusty Skua was pressed into service.
We flew for about two hours almost without a break. (Well, I took the breaks,…..while Patrick walked up and down the slope retrieving the models. :P ) It was good to get out there again. To feel the wind in my face, observe the fantastic views and draw that pure, fresh air into my lungs.
It proved to be a good time. I went home confident in the knowledge that I haven’t forgotten how to fly these models, and Patrick went home wearing the silliest of grims which spread from one ear the other!
Who will care to join us next time?
Keith (Little)

Hi keith
Im raging I couldnt get up today but I was working :-)
Well done patrick great to see you finished the zagi ( I thought you gave up on us) ill be up to fly with you the next time :D
-
Nice on Patrick fair play to you. I'm going bananas with cabin fever these days, I'll have to get out soon. Joined the royal county model flyers there on Saturday and now an official MACI member as we'll :D
-
Did you see that Keith? Stephen is now an insured flyer! Just thought I’d bring that to your attention.
Well done on joining the ‘Royal Flyers’ Stephen  I shall be expecting to see perfect landings from you at the next Glide-In! 8) Practice makes perfect,………so I’m told. (Personaly, I’m still practicing. )
Keith
-
Yes insured and dangerous. I've been practicing away
:D
-
It's no good being insured and not flying :D
When are we going up next keith ?? I hope it's before the glide-in .
You'll have to get down to big L soon Stephen that's the only way to get rid of the cabin fever ( that's not real flying your doing with royal county flyers it's all powered get back to gliders) :D
-
Hmmm, some people would say it’s no good flying if you’re not insured! But let’s not argue the point. :)
I’d say Saturday might be okay on the Big L provided the cloud isn’t too low. We’ll have to keep an eye on it Keith :?
And as for Stephen flying powered models. If I remember correctly, didn’t you start out flying a powered trainer?!!! (People who live in glasshouses,……………….  )
Little Keith
