hi all,
summer gliding season 2014 has started on tountinna. we meet every wednesday afternoon into evening until end of august or maybe early september if the weather is fine.
tountinna is near ballina/killaloe overlooking the shores of lough derg and is worth the trip for the view alone.
we fly all sorts of gliders including scale, aerobatic, 2 and 3 -channel floaters, even electric if the wind doesn't oblige.
anyone in the area who wants to fly with us is more than welcome to come and join us.
you can contact me here or my e-mail address is gerryb2003@gmail.com.
a few photos of recent flying.......

-
I must say Kieran’s bald eagle looks very life like. It even has a twig in it’s mouth ready for some nest repairs. :P
And Wally’s Bird of Time seems to enjoy a spot of soaring too. I’m not sure what the third model is. Looks to have an all moving tail. Probably one of Fred’s favourites,………after all, it’s got air brakes!

hi keith,
it's the mpx flamingo contest from the mid 90's. looks spectacular in a high banked turn with the black colour tipped with the day-glo orange and green.
i must see if i have a photo to show you.
-
Yeah, I’ve looked up some pictures of the Flamingo, Ger.
In close up it’s very “Alpina-ish” isn’t it. Although the tailplane is mounted slightly higher, and it obviously has a different airfoil.
Good ol’ Multiplex! :D

some more photos...........
light winds from the north have been with us for some time, so floaters and electric models are the order of the day.(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20104.jpg)(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20107.jpg)this is george's middle phase, a very nice all-rounder especially for beginners, handles strong winds with ease.(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20058.jpg)

I like George’s Middle Phase. It’s very much like a Phase 6 except with a High Mounted Wing and greater dihedral. Good choice that, George.
I think you must have had your Bird of Time on a diet?!!! I can see all it’s ribs!
Looks like a good time was had by all 8) Goos to see!
-
very light winds on the day (c.5kph) meant we were permanently scratching for lift and anyone who brought electric models were glad they did.
as you can see from the photos, we had a good turn out of about 20 model pilots and i'd like to thank all those who travelled to be with us on the day.
flying started about 10.30am and continued all day until about 5.30pm, at which time everyone packed for home.
another enjoyable day on tountinna.
-
yea keith, the middle phase is one of chriss foss' designs and actually has an alternative aileron wing so the raw beginner can progress without too much expense.
re the b-o-t, i find minimum diets for floaters helps to keep them aloft in light airs. no point in over feeding them i think you'll agree.

finally, occasionally, we share the sky with our full size bretheren......(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20077.jpg)(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20078.jpg)(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20079.jpg)(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20083.jpg)(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20191.jpg)(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20192.jpg)(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/gerryb/TT%202014%20inc%20glide-in%2C%2014.06.14%20193.jpg)more next time......

thanks alan, it really was a fantastic evening
-
So a grand time was had by all. Good to see it.
And thanks for the pictures Ger, even if they are a bit skewed on the forum.
Incidentally, where is everyone? There seems very little activity despite us being in the middle of what most people would say was the height of the season.
May be they are all on Face Book, or Twitter
