It's this time of the year again, where we spend more time in the workshop fixing the stuff we broke this year, and building new models for the next season.
So, what's on your worktops? :D
-
Too much!!
Minus Thermic
Shogun
Fly Fly Condor
Top Flite Spirit 100

Nice!
As for me, finally took time yesterday working on my ASH25!
Wings are in!

6.5m of wings :D

Phew! Them’s is big wings Fred.
At my place this is the model that has taken me 10 months to get to the present stage, (working on it little at a time) so I might have her ready to fly by Christmas (2015) . It’s a 1.8mtr low wing (with nothing to hold while launching but a very narrow plastic belly-pan), V tail. with full length ailerons
I don’t like building this model. The instructions are pants :!: and the pictures in the construction manual are just as useless. Basically I’ve given up on the instructions and I’m building it the way I ‘think’ it should go together. :?: Hopefully it’ll fly!
Oh!…..it’s called a Solange by the way.

Other than that,……it depends what Santa brings me.....(I think it might be made of foam with a full house wing.....I think  )

Nice one Keith
Will be interesting to see that one flying with the low wings setup :D

I've a few things happening
Finish building Titan tow plane
Finish Skylark
Fix the wing K8
Fix flamingo fuselage
If you're looking for me i'm in the shed

And the K13!
Busy man!
Oh, by the way, for the big L213 build, I have made the plans for the wings, tails...
Now, just need someone to cut foam!

Not getting much time at anything at the moment, but I'm going to start that Quark hopefully in the coming month.....
I'll test out your instructions Johnny :D
-
Hmmm, still thinking... any news of the gull wings Fred?
...with nothing to hold while launching but a very narrow plastic belly-pan)...
Just launch it inverted!

Don’t be silly Sverrir! The V tail would hit me on the head

I'm building the worlds most labour intensive Phase 6 kit in history, even allowing for Little Keith's recommended mods.
I was originally planning to have it ready for the September Big L fly in (2014). Need I say any more?
Should be ready for September 2015 :D
-
A Phase 6 Chris! What a sensible fellow you are!! :D (I take back all the things I’ve been thinking about you)
If you get stuck, give me a call.

Hi Keith,
You can stick with all of those unpleasant thoughts about me, they were probably right. If I was sensible I wouldn't be playing with toy airplanes. I'd be playing golf or collecting stamps...
No technical problems really, I was not set up for building plywood fuselages. For the last several years I've been using a 'universal' jig for building wings and fuselages. It started life as a Lincoln Log wing jig, then got modified for carbon rod builds and more recently still got some new attachments made (ahem, essentially lumps of MDF with threaded holes in them) for building fuselages.
Anyway, my universal jig meant that until now I've not had any need for a building board, and since its around 30 years since I last built an all ply fuselage (Middle Phase), I'd forgotten how useful they can be.
The build became labour intensive when I tried making do without a proper building board for the P6, so now in addition to the model itself I've now got a new building board and after 3 attempts a device for reliably making triangle stock. I've also now got a nice set of fusleage sides cut from a single piece of 1/16 ply. At least the fuselage formers are still usable...
Freds laser cutting and cyano meant I didn't need a building board for my Quark Micro.
I strongly suspect that my universal jig will be getting rolled out when its time to stick the P6 fuselage sides together though.
Chris
-
:?: Er,……….. I’m a little confused Chris. (Not difficult for me. The older I get, the more confuse I become :( )
You mention “making triangle stock” and “a fuse cut from a single piece of ply” Are you building your P6 from a kit or off a plan? (I assume the latter rather than the former)
As for your comments about golf and stamp collecting. Surely anyone can knock a little white ball down a hole in the ground or sit on their arse and move bits of paper around!
LK.
-
Keith,
You could say its a bit of both. After two attempts at building the kit fuselage the ply sides were only good for templates and the kit triangle stock was matchwood.
Attempt 3 appears to be going together much more successfully.
So, hopefully I'll end up with a Little Keith P6, with a hand crafted fuselage and kit flying surfaces - the absence of a proper building board didn't have any impact on the kit flying surfaces, they all appear to be straight and true. Tonights tasks were painting over the repairs to another model and making a neat servo tray. Next I need to figure out where the Rx will fit nicely and allow some reasonable routing for the receiver antennae rather than the usual afterthought "where can these fit and still be out of the way".
BEC to be figured out yet.

My latest build, adding finishing touches. It's a 25" span rubber powered Auster built from the skyleeda plan available for download from Outerzone.

Hi John,
Are you printing the tissue or painting?
Brush or air brush?
Chris
-
Ah John, I love your FF models!
-
Hi Chris,
It's covered in a lightweight iron on film and handpainted afterwards with acrilics. It adds a little weight but looks better in the air.
Thanks Fred, looking like a good flier.
John.

Did a bit more work on the ASH!
Wing tubes glued, and Incidence checked (quadruple check!)
Oh, and I know why I paid almost nothing for the fuselage! One of the wing socket in the fuselage is higher than the other :!: Measured it 200 times just to be sure, but it is. Not a biggie, there is a disgraceful step on both wings. I'll see later how to fix that.
Anyway, a few photos:

     Fred that looks a while thin wing for the size of the fuselage
-
What's the WS Fred? That's a beaut
-
Thank you both :D
Yeah, very high aspect ratio on that one!
Very flexy wings, can't wait to see that in the air :D
Stephen, WS is 6.5m (but root chord is 210mm on top of my head)
Fuselage is 2.2m long if I remember :?:
Oh, and finally, after all these years and countless hours of flying, I am giving my ASW15 a bit of attention! New canopy and fresh paint job on the way :D
-
Hi John, what covering did you use for the Auster and where did you get it?
I need some for a little rubber FF job.
Thanks in advance.

HI all
I have been busy over the last few months, with projects and pss kits so I only got to post a few quick comments here on the forum. However, here is what I have for 2015.
This is a ARC foka 4, 5m glider I ordered from one of my french pals and picked up in sept 2014. Hope to have it finished for March at big L for a test flight, however, it is for glider towing with Andrew's new titan towplane later this year.
I also have an L213 4m to start as soon as I get the wings cut.
I have been doing some ship modelling over the past 3 months with Bill and wayne, which is different from the planes, but enjoyable, Mainly for model shows and displays.

Just finished this Type 43 frigate 1/72 scale, with smoke, moving gun, rotating radars and heli rotors. It is a big ship at 1.9m length.
Hope to see you all on the slopes soon!!

I take it it's cold up there First flight in March! Better stop doing the posing model and start to glue some servos! :)
-
It's old age Fred, he says he feels the cold more these days
-
Yea, “Cold kills the old,…..” You’d better watch out John!
-
Ha ha funny, you lot are all smart fellows indeed!!
hate the cold, I want to move to France, food, wine and sun :D
got the new servos today so will be installed this weekend.

Ha ha funny, you lot are all smart fellows indeed!!
All I know is you're older than me and I can still hack the cold!!

Yessss, ship pictures are permitted!
This is mine... a 1930's Swedish Skerry cruiser sailboat at 1:5 scale.

Ohhhh brilliant....but does it fligth well??
( i go drifting far away..... )

Very nice! Is the decking seperate planks?
-
Yes Seleri, separate planking with maple tree

Brilliant!
-
Ohhhh brilliant....but does it fligth well??
Of course, just a matter of initial speed!

Bit late I know, but I was planning to have this ready for last Septembers Mt Leinster meeting.
This is the result of the worlds most labour intensive Phase 6 kit build.
I'm happy with the finish. Unflown as yet, since the wind was a bit iffy at Mt L last weekend. Built with all of Little Keiths recommendations, or slight variations on same.
I'm quite looking forward to wringing it out.

Ar! Two Chris Foss designs. :D
Chris:
As I said to you on the mountain, that’s a very nice looking P6. Especially with those “Home Made” fuse sides. I’m wondering what the AUW is, being an all ‘glassed’ airframe. Mine weighs 1.35Kg.
The building instructions declare the AUW as 1.2Kg with three servos. (A central servo for ailerons and no flaps.) Given that mine has twin aileron servos and twin servo operating flaps I recon I’m pretty near the “norm.”
Out of curiosity what does yours weigh?
Bill:
I’ve never seen a P5 in the flesh, so to speak. (They’re not made any more now are they?) Don’t know if the span and length are the same (or the airfoil) but I recon that P5 looks very much like a High Wing semi symmetric P6. Good to see you’ve built a full house wing. Gives much more flexibility for differing wind conditions doesn‘t it.
So………….how did it fly????? We demand to know! :!:
L. Keith
-
Span is slightly bigger, more area and full house. To my eye its prettier than the P6.
JP did the test flight, slightly tail heavy, flew well, looped OK. Roll rate a little slow but flaps weren't set up to give me full span aileron whic will probably help rolling.
Very pleased
:D :D
-
Hi Keith,
I'm afraid to put it on the scales, at least until I've flown it. I reckon its a windy day model though.
The scales might tell me that it'll never fly, so I'l fly it first then weigh it if you don't mind.
Chris
-
Pleased things went well Bill. :D It’s good to know that all those years of work paid off! Well done.
Chris; ……. I’m sure it’ll fly. Just launch it with lots of positive thoughts in your mind!
(I’m going up Big L today to try my grossly repaired Alpina. This bird weighs a lot more than she did when I first got her due to extra glue/resin, and like you, I haven’t bothered to weigh it  …….It either flys or it doesn’t. )
