Post by: Fred on May 17, 2010, 11:20:33 AM
Well, that's this week end !  :D
Good warm weather, and even wind has been ordered !  \:D/
Meeting start at the usual place (9 Stones) or the West slope depending of the wind.
I'm aiming to be at the slope at 10am.

Roughly, who is coming ? I plan to bring a BBQ so we all can have some food at the slope  :D  :D

I’m a very busy person these days.  ‘Time is money’ you know.  I’m not at all sure I can make it :?: ……..

Oh, all right then :) …………..I might go for a while, :D …… but only if you let me win at combat!

Talking of combat; I don’t think there will be much of that going on this weekend. Forecast is for light winds so it’ll be a case of break out the “floaters”. We had a lot of thermal stuff last May as I recall, could be the same this weekend.

Joe is playing around with his men friends for the next fortnight so we’ll have to forgo his company. (He always nicks my rolls of cellotape anyway)

Who else is up for a spot of  sunbathing on the slopes? (While flying of course!)

Keith

I have finally navigated to the correct post regarding this weekends fly-in at Mt Leinster.
I looked at the forecast and it is giving a miserable 4 mph winds.
I was once told that if someone breaks wind on the East coast of the USA , by the time it reaches Ireland it turns into a gale ! minus the smell lol
I hope the good old Yanks are feeding on egg and onion sandwiches !

Hhmmmm………Been reading the weekends weather forecast from six different sites. They all say Saturday will have winds of < 8Kmh and variable direction. :(  Five say Sunday will be the same and the other says winds from the north at 15Kmh.

There might be some thermals around but the planes will have to get to the thermals from the slope and in those light conditions that could involve a lot of walking!

If the forecasts haven’t improved by this evening I suggest we postpone the event until next weekend. (Driving for a couple of hours or more just to get a sun tan seems a bit extravagant.)

Anyone else have any views on the matter?

K.

My Dad is in his 80th ! year . Yes 80th !!!!!!
He has his new shiny Multiplex DG600 to maiden at the weekend , but I think it is going to have to wait until the next date.
What ever alternate date is set then we will do our utmost to visit Mt L.

Can we decide as soon as poss?
Those of us travelling from the North would have to cancel our B&B and rebook!

Happy enough to postpone, but are we sure we'd get better the next week?

I am in favour of changing the date, I will not make the following weekend though, our club is hosting a comp.

Are we sure we’d get better the next time? Good question Bill.

If we assume that the average wind speed prediction for this weekend is less than 10Km/h then that effectively equates to no flying this weekend. In that case I'm thinking that no future weekend could be any worse, from a flyers point of view. :?

On the assumption that a future weekend might have higher wind speeds, and on the basis that it couldn’t be any worse than this weekend, I say postpone.

That raises the question of when to have the ISR Glide-In. Bearing in mind the Shannon club have their Glide-In on the 13th June, we have the choice of next weekend or the following weekend. :?:  If we put it off to the following weekend that puts us only a week away from the Shannon’s do. (Assuming they don’t postpone theirs.)

FRED,………….(oh guru of matters gliding) guide us through this maze……………..please!

(Just to add insult to injury, I was on the south slope of Big L today with 50 - 60Km/h winds at the ridge. :D  As Fred would say, “There were lifts everywhere!”)

Oh boy.. Ok, so, because you are asking, here is what I think (put kids away from the monitor now!  :P  )

As I said, I'll go with the majority, but that don't mean I agree (the joy of democracy... Take that China!    ).

If we only fly when the conditions are "right", in nothing less than 30km/h of wind, wind dead straight on the favourite slope, better to fly planes, no problem to find lift and the correct slope (I know, I know, don't look for that gun, it's only to make a point   ).

Forecast ? well, they already have trouble with the next 24hrs one, so 4 days... (forecast yesterday was NE 25km/h winds... Today, 10, tomorrow ?), and to me, I will fly, or not, but I will try, that's for sure (I think 2 week ends ago, a paraglider agreed when I said that if you don't launch, you will never know!). The most important thing, to me, is if it's going to rain or not. At this time of the year, no wind mean pretty much thermals, and we know that they are really powerful in Mt Leinster.

So, me, I will fly. Just to improve my flying skills, do something else than flying like I have a motor, try to catch that thermal that is going to make my day, or fly really smoothly to stay up as long as possible. I will certainly walk down the hill (and back, the hard bit... No arm anyway  :P ), but that's part of the game.

Anyway, after saying all that (and bored you to death with another French badly expressed moment  :P ) I understand that people coming from far away need to know what to expect on the day to make the decision to drive to the event, so I will still go with the majority.

If this is cancelled, let me know, and I'll have that changed on the MACI website with the new dates :D

All of your points are very valid and the main idea is a social gathering. Tis a bit of a drive for a chat methinks. Please don't shoot me. I think that people want to use their time and brownie points wisely. Fred remember it pissed down the last time you were in cork and all you got was mediocre croissants. I know we all want to travel but 5kmh is really scratching. Have to build a hlg for that.

Only my twopence worth but will do what I am toldfor
the greater good( back in the good books?)

:!: Lets work backwards.

12th September = ISR Glide -In

August = Family holidays and a long time to wait for the “May ISR Glide-In”

July = Retroplane

June = Shannon Glide-In

I say this ISR Glide-In has got to be in May.

I vote for next weekend ………29th & 30th May

Well this is a curious phenomenon. It seems that pilots will either say when they can’t / don’t want to fly, or say nothing! :?  (Apart from Fred who, being a democrat, will go with the majority.)
Our Northern friends want a quick answer to know whether to book B+B or not.

So how about this then………

Would all pilots who would like to fly (in a group) on Mt Leinster in the near future please state their preferred dates.

If, by this time tomorrow night, there is no majority in favour of a specific weekend we’ll ‘throw caution to the wind', (if you’ll pardon the pun) and leave it as being this coming weekend. What do we all think of that???

Oh, on a slightly different note. .....
Richard, just because you dear ol’ dad is 80   you can tell him from me he’s not old,  he’s just a ‘Spring Chicken.’

I can understand people not wanting to travel if forecats wind is light and I have another event I can go to if this cancelled (NIMSA Thermal event), so I'm easy either way. (No comments please :?: )

Basically, I'd just like an early decision one way or the other, although I would miss your happy smiling face Keith

My heart says "go" ! my head says "stay at home and when the winds are stronger, spend my money and go down to visit Keith and the Mt L flyer's then."

According to windfinder, winds are now forecast for 10mph / 9knots !

My heart is starting to win !!!!!
I know my Phase 6 will not fly but to hell with it I will go if that's what the rest are doing !
Fred is reportedly supplying the beer !

Hey Richard,

Your Phase 6 might be tempted to stay in the air in light conditions if you “droop” the ailerons by 2 or 3 mm.
I’ve found the down side is that this creates a tendency for the plane to tip stall. If you have dual aileron servos it’s less of a problem because you can increase and decrease the camber using your Tx to find the best situation while you’re flying.
If you’ve only got a central  aileron servo you’ll have to adjust the linkage, making the changes “permanent” for the duration of each flight. In this case I suggest you bring her in to land a little faster than normal……..or bring a large bottle of CA with you! :(

Fred recons the larger winged models are easier to fly in light conditions. Haven’t you got a 5 or 6 mtr span glider yet? ..........Shame on you

Oh,……the attached photo is for Bill’s benefit. Seemingly he fears not seeing my “Happy smiling face”

Well this is true!  Unfortunately, John, there aren’t many people in the world with sufficient culture and breading to appreciate these finer aspects of life. (In fact, apart from me, I think you’re the only one! :( )

I had Windrider Fox, :D  Richard. They do prefer light stuff so you never know, she might get airborne. (Ed has one too. He recons they perform better if all the airframe is covered in tape.)

Oh,……and as to the Glide-In this weekend. I’ll pop up to the slopes for a chat and a cup of tea and a Bun. There might even be some flying as well. :D
The forecast for here today was 6-10Km/h. In fact there were extended periods of speeds up to 15Km/h.
Doesn’t mean that will be the same at the weekend, but…..”Hope springs Eternal”.

Count me In

Ok, so, after re-read of the entire thread, the meeting is.... a GO!  :D

We can't move it to a further date, and cancelling it because the weather is going to be good, I can't really take that decision!  :P

So, I will be at the slope at around 10ish on Saturday, everybody's welcome of course.
No worries if you cannot come because of the lack of wind, we'll have another one in September !  :D  :D  And in only a few weeks, we have the West meeting  :D  (shame I'm going to miss it!!  :!:  :!:  BUNNNNSSSSSS!!!)

Bill, if you have already booked a room, don't cancel it, I take it ! If you've already paid, let me know, and I'll send you a Paypal  :D

Bring some floaters, just in case, or even some electric stuff (no shame this time... NOT!).
I will have a BBQ with me! Bring some food, or I'll buy stuff for it, let me know, could be nice to have a lunch at the slope together, especially if we have a sunny weather!  :D  Male bonding at the slope, Keith is going to love it!    :P

Er,…..were you intending to use CA or Epoxy?  Fred.  Count me out either way. I’m a happily married man! (Well,…..married.)(Well,….not actually married, just sort of married! If you get my drift.)

Anyway, I’ll be on the slope from about 1pm Saturday. Got to take the wife to the vet in the morning. Something wrong with her horses teeth.(More expense  )

I’ll bring the flat V tail Thingy and the ASW22. There’re the only things I’ve got that “float”. Might bring a electric foamie, if that’s going to be allowed?

Pitty there's not a runway there, we could do some aerotowing! :D

O.K. Fred sorry, Richard, Bill and myself, have had a long talk and have decided to give this weekend a miss!. Wind forcast is still poor, and I was hoping to give the DR808 a good workout, however not to be. Looks like summer is arriving in Ireland. Typical! Always does when I'm not there.
I know the wind forecast is light but, it has the making of a very nice weekend on the slope. A little dynamic and hopefully lots of thermals. Kick back, relax, enjoy the sun and a gentle breeze. This is summer soaring. Maybe you take a walk down the slope, maybe you speck out. Hone those piloting skills. Nice smooth delicate flying. Probably as rewarding as RC soaring gets. Forget that it is a slope event and call it a thermal meeting. Now you have the perfect weather!! Bring the DLG's, bring the floaters, bring the efficient machines.
Shame I'm missing this one. Flying, BBQ and a big red sunburned face on Sunday evening!  :!:  :!:
Enjoy.......ya lucky B*******

I’ve just sent an email to the secretary of the MCFC to ask if we can use their flight ground this weekend for an afternoon of aerotow. (As you know I’ve got a little Cessna that can tow gliders up to about 2mtr.)

The matter is complicated slightly because one of the committee members, who lives very close to the flying ground, lost his father this week in a car crash. So in deference to his bereavement there might be ‘No Flying’ at the ground this weekend.

I’ll let you know the outcome.

Bungee!…..doesn’t have quite the same ‘ring’ as Banzai, does it. Never mind. I think bungee’s are going to be the only way of  exploring for potential thermals this weekend provided we have visibility. So far today, as yesterday, Big L is covered in mist.

I’ve fitted a tow hook into the lightest loading plane I posses and I’m reading all about thermal flying. Apparently, the first plane into a therm has the right to choose the direction of rotation for following planes. A kind of ‘help yourself’ one way street! (I think this book could double as a guide to driving through Dublin)

Yes,….please do run Nando, and the faster the better!

I have to say Dennis that bungee looks in very good order. I had one once but decided thermal flying wasn’t my style so I sold it. So I’ll be relying on yours. I don’t see a securing peg anywhere in the picture, assume you do have one? :?:

That picture is from the shop. Mine is one year old, the rubber piece is not exactly of high grade.

"securing peg" ? do you mean the "anchor" ?

completely off topic but I have to say if the 90 deg bracket is your anchor then you are taking your life into your own hands every time you use it.
Several years ago in the UK aomeone was killed when the anchor came free and hit them in the back of the head. A corkscrew type anchor (get them in pet shops for a dog) is much safer.

Please be careful there is a lot of energy stored in the bungee

point taken, Ralph.

btw, it takes two strong hands to extract it from the ground.
also 'anchor' sold  here (http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=15826) does not look any safer.

I think this is the kind of anchor that Ralph is taking about. It's the one I use with my bungee. I think i got it in the pet section in Woodies.

If you're going to play with bungees. Visit a pet shop and buy a screw in dog stake.

Guy was killed in Holland about 15 years ago when his stake pulled out and got him in the head!

Couple of quid is WELL worth it!

Well lads, it looks as though we wont be short of bungees!
Don’t forget to charge up those batteries tonight, including the Tx batteries. And if any flight battery hasn’t been used for some time, deep cycle it a couple of times first.

Looks like it could get quite warm on the Big L tomorrow. That’ll bring out the spectators, :(  so remember to wear your “T” shirt with the ’Answers’ printed on the back. 8)  (I’ve just got mine out and noticed that the logo on the front has, what looks to me, like a Phase 6 above the words Island Slope Rebels. Very good! )

I’m sure someone said they were bringing a barbi’ and someone else mentioned something about beer, but who is bringing the girls? :?:  (Well,……..I thought they could help to pass the time if there was no lift :D )

On a slightly more sensible note, (unusual for me,) for the past 4 days the mountain has been cloud/mist covered until 1 or 2pm. I’ll post a weather report in the morning but I wouldn’t bother trying to get to the slopes too early if I were you,……….you might have a long wait!

Right, I’m off to check I’ve got everything ready,…………now let me see, Tx, models, toolbox, spectacles and testicles………….

Good Morning!!!

Now you may think I’m telling you Pork Pies (lies) but the Brass Tacks (facts) are; that I’ve just been up the Apples & Pears (stairs) because my Trouble & Strife (wife) recons the Currant Bun (sun)  is breaking through the morning mist. :)
I had a Butcher Hook (look) out of the window and sure enough there it was. But the clouds aren’t moving so there can’t be any George Raft (draft) out there. (In fact the wind speed is actually zero at the moment.)
The Barney Rubble (trouble) with writing any message in this rhythm slang is that it’s so Pony & Trap (crap) I’m not going to do it any more! I’m gonna make myself a cup-a Rosie Lee (tea) instead.  (Phew!)

So here we go on the first morning of the I.S.R. May Glide-In

Conditions are:………..

That all important wind:……………..extremely light and variable in direction, (< 3Km/h)

Temperature: 11 C.

Rel. Humidity 98%

Atmospheric Pressure 1029 steady

Cloud cover: Hazy with broken cloud, clearing.

Visibility: There is a low mist covering valley areas, however for the first time this week Big L. is NOT cloud covered at this time of the morning. (Divine intervention?)

As I said before, I can’t get to the slopes until this afternoon, so I’ll look forward to seeing you then.
(Bring some sun block………you’re gonna need it! :D )

K.

Bill and John , if your reading this then maybe we need to rethink going to Slieve Gallion ! unless you want to fly your DLG gliders.

Hi Bill the small amount of wind was in the South and now changing to the West, I will be ok to fly light lift planes.
Really it is up to you if you want to travel up or not.
I am going up anyway, if all fails I can chat to the lonely mountain sheep lol
Let me know what you would like to do.
I tried phoning JP but he is still in the cot.

Well, I hope the rest of you guys had as good a day as Fred, Peter, Dennis, and I did. :D
Wall to wall sunshine,  clear skies 20 gusting 30 Km/h winds on the ridge. Thermals and ridge lift. Fantastic! 8)

Everything flew today, in fact Fred and I decided to have some combat, even though neither of us had brought a wing. So we fought with built up winged gliders! (easy to repair) In the end I let Fred slice the rear off my V tail plane. (The hell I did!!!) So it’s one point to Fred. I shall have my revenge tomorrow.

All in all a surprisingly good day. :D

Anyone care to join us tomorrow?

Well what a day!! we had 20mph winds on Moneymore today with some of the best lift I have ever had on sw slope. Richard and I went up to the slope with forcast of 6mph winds, well we got it completely wrong richard was in his element with his little Fox glider and I flew the x-treme. Poor Bill dropped out ealy in the morning, however we did give him a call just to comfort him when he realised he had missed a great day.

The lift was not so obvious today, (Sunday) on Big L. Of course Fred can fly on nothing more than a rabbits fart   but I struggled for the first part. He was doing rolls and loops while I was scratching around trying to stay in the air!

At one point I had my (Freds’ ex) 4mtr ASW 22 sinking fast, unable to find any lift at all. I could already see the top of the plane but Fred kept shouting “Go further out! go further out!” So with the plane getting further and ‘smaller’ as she sailed out into the distance, while getting lower and lower, I resisted the urge to turn back to the slope. :(
“But Fred,” I protested, “she’s already a kilometre out from the ridge and still sinking, I’ll never get her back!”
“Keep going you’ll find something, just keep going……..use minimal input to the controls!“
So with dry lips and sweaty palms I watched this 4mtr bird shrink to the size of a dot………….and then she went up :) ……..and up a bit more :D …..and up, up, up…….And I started breathing again.

There was more ridge lift to be found further along the South slope today although still not quite as much as yesterday so it was there that I made camp and enjoyed the pleasures of the ASW and also the much repaired and patched Phase 6, which flew remarkably well considering she has a curved fuse’! Looks a bit like a banana,…..only blue and white instead of yellow!

Alas, no one else was to join us so by just after 2pm I collected up my gear and started back down the hill.
Just before arriving at the car park I met Alan who was on his way up to the slope. How did you get on Alan?

The weekend turned out much better than I had expected, although I definitely prefer ridge lift to flying out from the hill hunting for thermals. Each to their own,……but I’d rather let someone else find the therms, then I’ll fly out to them once I know where they are. (I enjoy breathing!)

K.

Well lets just say that my K8 will need more patching and repairing like your Phase 6. Lesson learned. Do not let someone who does not know how to launch a big glider launch your big glider. But I did manage to get one very short flight with it before the bad launch. During that flight it did not fly quite right. Needs some more tweaking.

Fred was playing with his camera throughout the weekend,………………..where are the pictures Fred?

Richard; how did you find your Windrider Fox?…..I found the aileron controls rather ‘floppy’ on mine.

A quick message (in meeting all day in Limerick  :!:  :!: )

Well, certainly the best week end I had since last year !
Big sun, big wind in the afternoon, thermals, dynamic, everything !  :D

More tonight when I get home. I only have 3 or 4 photos though, as we were only 4 on the Saturday.

Alright so, here are a few photos  :D
Once again, fantastic week end ! For me, on a personal note, the highlight of my week end was on Sunday morning.
Was at the slope at around 9am. Launched the Algebra, and when down scratching the tree tops down the valley for around 20 minutes or so, fighting for every centimetre of altitude until I came back up at horizon's level.. For a victory (relief) roll, and a landing! The glider at some point, was only a dot just above the pine forest... Best 1 hour flying session I had in a very long time!  :D  :D  Just regretted not to have launched the asw15... Would have been even more interresting (and I guess, slightly easier too with a much bigger machine!)... Ah well, we'll see that next year!  :P
So, here are some photos, and next official meeting for us will be in September  :D
