Fingers crossed that the weather will be good over the weekend, for our trip to Big L. Richard and I will be down on Saturday morning and staying over to Sunday,( Wild Bill is still out of action with a bad back so can't make the event) so hope to meet you all at the carpark, for a good weekends craic on the slope.

Sorry to hear “Scottie” (he must have been called that more than once in his life! ) won’t be joining us. He’s very good at launching planes you know. I once asked him to launch one of mine, meaning  for him to launch it off the ridge. Instead, he nearly launched it off the planet!

The winds look like they’re gonna play ball this weekend, predominately westerly’s at 30 - 40K. I can live with that. (40 - 60 would be better, but let’s not be greedy.)

Don’t forget to bring some foamies that I can smash to pieces with my combat wing, John.  (I do like a bit of ‘rough’ sometimes)

So,…….I shall look forward to seeing your happy smiling faces on Saturday.

Sorry Keith I'm having enough  problems driving the 20 mins to work at the moment!  The thought of 4 - 5 hours is just not on. I wouldn't be able to stand at the far end, let alone wander up and down hills and fly

The launch technique was learnt throwing F3f models in Scotland in the days when they were b***y heavy and needed a good chuck.

Never a bad thing to throw a model hard........................ as long as it's not at the ground

Saw one in Norway thrown in to a dry stone wall! We were launching over the wall and one of the Danish team slipped as he was throwing £1000 worth of model...OOPS!

See you at the next event , Or maybe up here :?:

Guys,

Just checked the weather, looks like a bit of drizzle for Saturday afternoon...
Someone have another forecast?

Looks like Sunday is going to be great !
Both days on the West Slope. Do I bring a BBQ ?  :D

Les and I will be there on Sat only :(

The general consensus of forecasters seems to be poss drizzle/showers for Saturday pm :(  with fine weather on Sunday. :)
For anyone flying on Saturday afternoon it could be a case of  playing ‘Doge the Showers.’ I normally assemble only one plane of around two metre wingspan, so if it does shower I can slide the model under the car and just sit out the rain. Fortunately the west slope is only a few meters from the car parking area.
Personally I recon there will be wind speeds of 40 to 50Km/h at the top of the slope on Saturday :D , and 25 to possibly 40Km/h on Sunday :) . That would equal good Bank & Yank flying for anyone having a bash at racing. :D
I intend to be there for most of the day on both Sat. & Sun. However I’ve developed a small groin hernia which tends to get a bit sore sometimes if I stand (or walk) for too long  . Bugger!  Anyway I’ll be there for some of the time on both days.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as I can :D

Hi Keith

Which slope is west facing, can't remember, old age I expect

Hey John,

That's the one when you arrive, on the way to Nine Stones, after the first gate.
We park at the forest gate.
Not sure if I'm clear, but that's the one we flew PSS from :D

Saturday might be alright, seems that will only be a few showers... But of course, locally, we might have nothing!

And good wind for the entire week end  :D

By the way, did you book rooms at the Ryan's pub ?

Post by: Happy Days on September 09, 2010, 22:17:50 PM
John,…….cast your mind back to the time when you, Richard, and I were on Big L.
I think it was after the indoor fly-in near Kiltealy.
Richard was flying his Phase 6 for the first time.
That was the “lower” West Slope. (You might also remember that there's lots of heather near the top of the ridge.)

I like that slope because the Hang & Para-gliders can’t use it, for some reason I don’t understand, so we’ll have ‘clear skies.’

I’m hoping you’re gonna show me some exquisite Vector aerobatics this weekend John. :D  (Three, four point rolls, followed by a stall turn and an outside loop, finishing with a spot landing at my feet!)
I’ll buy you a drink if you do it.!!!

Thanks Fred

This slope is not great for big PSS , therefore I think I will stick to the vector ,extreme and the 4m DR808 this weekend, I haven't called ryans pub, will phone them tomorrow, I know it's late to get a room, but I will take a chance. If we can't get sorted, I can take the motorhome down on saturday and park up some were?

Post by: Fred on September 09, 2010, 22:27:02 PM
Hey John,

With the good blow we are going to have this week end, I don't think flying big PSS will be an issue :)

We flew big fat heavy non aerodynamic gliders on the West slope with less wind than that! Ok, for the PSS event, the wind was not really there, but this slope produce great lift with 20km/h wind and up.  :D

Haven't called Ryan's pub too    I'm sure they have some beds free, well fingers crossed anyway !

I don't think there will be an issue to leave the motorhome in Bunclody, or even, why not, at the slope  :D

Thanks keith

My internet is playing up tonight and I am getting return messages late,     Yes I know the slope now! as for the fancy flying, I will let richard entertain you, he's flying the vector with added weight, looping and rolling all over the sky. I just fly in his shadow ha ha !

Oh! Don’t forget to bring some foamies guys. There’s nothing like a spot of combat to sharpen ones’ reaction times!

Just don't all gang up on me! (I hate it when that happens )

Yes Fred, we plan to travel in richards car, so I think that I will leave the Big B52 at home, however that may change. I would like to get some more flight time up on the vector and the DR808. looks good weather wise.

I will let you know if ryan's Pub have any rooms tomorrow, I will give them a call in the morning.

O.K keith I will try and get a wing ready just for you old man!!

Good man Richard, you’ll be at the mountain before me but I’ll look forward to scrutinizing your flying ability this afternoon!

Just to let you know what you’re heading towards…………..

At the moment the top half of the mountain is covered in cloud although the surrounding area has much higher cloud levels. There are a few little spots of blue poking through!

No rain, but after a thoroughly wet night  the ground is well sodden

Temp. = 9 C

Wind speed/direction = 7Km/h from the south west

Vis. = 25+Km

I’ll be up on the Big L by 1 o/c at the latest. See you all then.

Keith

Just as a foot note and a sign of just how much things can change in half an hour……..

There are now vast areas of blue sky and bright sunshine. However, the cloud on the mountain is actually thickening at the moment. Wind speed has increased very slightly and gone round a little more to the west’ish. (WSW) Temperature has risen one degree and now 10 C.

I’ve seen his situation many times, and I recon today has all the makings for a good autumn days flying. Hold on to your hats!

Well what a day at Mt.L!  Between my slicing Fred`s wing off his 4 meter ship in a mid-air collision(really sorry that that happened buddy, really shame :( ) and Keith's miraculous escape from loosing both wings during flight! and sorry i nearly forgot the best part of the story for those not there, Fred actually managed to recover from the impact then land with 1.5 wings and with only one aileron      Had to be there to see the piloting skills! Thanks Lads for the great day out, looks like i wont make tomorrow so have a good one, and hope the heads weren't to sore in the morning   So Hope Sunday is slightly less uneventful, good to see and fly with you all in such a special spot.

See you maybe around xmas

Title: Sept 2010 Glide in
Post by: Happy Days on September 12, 2010, 07:56:38 AM
Well yesterday was a most interesting days flying. Apart from some showers which insisted on depositing respectable quantities of water in the afternoon, causing all pilots to dive for the protection of their cars, the lift was pretty fair all day.
A few breath stopping moments were witnesses including one of me launching a model without switching it on first.  The Phase 6 rose, drifted behind the flight line, and then nose dived into the ground. (Very embarrassing)
But certainly the most fantastic event of the day, in my opinion, was seeing Fred land one of his 4mtr birds after half the right wing and right aileron (including the aileron servo) had been removed following a mid air collision. He just brought it into land as if there was nothing wrong with it!
That was 100% pure skill. I take my hat off to you Fred.

So, let’s see what today has in stall for us.

This morning , as usual, Big L is sleeping under it’s duvet of cloud. Blue sky almost everywhere else and brilliant sunshine which is starting to take some of the damp chill off the atmosphere.
Right now the temp. is 10C. Wind speed /direction is Zero, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the day is lost………….by noon all predictions are that there will be a gentle westerly with only the slight possibility of the odd shower.

Looking forward to meeting Les and Ralph, and also Alan today. Oh, and anyone else who cares to venture forth up onto the mighty mountain. (I’d throw at least one ‘floater’ in the car if I were you lads, don’t think there’s gonna be a vast amount of lift today.)
See you up there around miday.

That was possibly one of the most enjoyable days I’ve had in the 2 years and 9 months I’ve been flying model planes. :D
The reason I say that is because I went home with all models still working!
No,  joking aside it’s been a very pleasant day because of the very pleasant company. Unfortunately you certainly missed something good, Bill. Hope to see you at the next one.

Fair to good lift all day meant everything I loaded in the car flew, at some point. 8)  The only slightly disappointing thing was that despite 6 planes partaking in combat, I didn’t manage to hit any of them! :(  Les’s Zagi and my Skua had a “parting kiss” at one point, but other than that, no contacts. Couldn’t believe it! :!:

I trust all you guys had a safe journey home. The next time we meet en-mass wont be till next year.   But they do say that, “Absents makes the heart grow fonder”

Of course, after such a marvellous weekend, now I have to face a very ordinary Monday. Oh well,…….poo happens!

And now the fun part !  :D

Here is a photo of the ASW15 after my landing... Yep, landed that thing with a few less bits than when I launched it  :D
That was tense, but manage to bring it back after I regain some "controls" after the impact.
Reflexes kicked in after the big bang, and after a dive, managed to stabilise the thing, and went for a high speed low pass (after the recovery, lost a bit of altitude  :P ), and could not believe what I saw !
Even managed to do a few passes to prepare the landing as I wanted to at least save the fuselage!

Anyway, all good in the end, shit happen, and with a few hours work, will be like new !  :D

Shame we did not had a video camera, but here it is :

And finally, John launch of the Crystal.. In slow motion on that one as that was funny !

More to come, as soon as I have 5 minutes  :D

Looks like a great weekend. Sorry i missed it. I have created a monster here with work. I knew making the buns so nice was a bad idea. Also the stork will be making an approach on runway 1 very soon indeed, So my hands are well and truely full. I keep digging that hole deeper and deeper  8-[

Fingers crossed for next time...

Maybe the indoor in cork if its on this year.. was a great laugh last time.

From the video I think it’s pretty clear that John P has fallen head over heals in love with your Crystall, Fred. (He always was rather impulsive  )

And Dave, it seems, is about to take delivery of,……..not a Grunau Baby,………but a David type baby!!!
Do let us all know when it arrives, Dave. I’m sure we’re all trusting it makes a good approach and a safe landing.
What with work, flying, and making delicious buns I’m surprised you have the time, let alone the energy, to make babies. (Obviously you’re a more talented fellow that I gave you credit for! :?: )

Good Luck to you and herself Dave. :D

hi bill, yea , that t 30, slingsby 'prefect' is mine. i scaled up an old radio modeller plan to give me a 3.2m span model. colour scheme is of a dutch reg a/c. i started the model in 1995 and finished it this year for retroplane but i didn't go. last sat was it's best outing so far, it likes a good breeze/ good lift kind of a day but it doesn't scratch very well.

hey john p, that was one of the most graceful launches i have ever seen!
it's obvious your years as a ballet dancer has stood you in good stead, the fluid motion, the release, the follow through and recovery from the cat's tumble....extraordinary stuff!  i would have given you douze points if both legs had been straight up as you went over. impressive none the less, well done, john

Lovely model Ger. Colour scheme is striking. Glad to hear it flew as well as it looks.

Certainly a model to be proud of

thanks bill. i had a collection of photos of the full size in several rm mags so deciding to go with the scheme was the easy part. i covered all the silver parts in silver solartex in one night. the red solartex took about 3 weeks! easy to do, just so much of it

Hi Guys

WOW! what a great weekend, I had more flights over the two days than I have had over the last two months. Thanks to the Slope rebels for once again a great weekend.

Yes that big glider, well I give it all I had, to get it airborn, all 12kgs of it!, I have never thrown a model that heavy before, however, what a model, it flew fantastic. Also I did not get any photos this time, sorry guys, I was just to busy flying.
