Slope Soaring / Racing wing project.
« on: September 22, 2009, 17:41:45 PM »
So having gotten a bit bogged down and lost a bit of interest in my other projects for the moment. I decided to distract myself with something completely different.

The idea is to design and build a simple basic flying wing purely for racing/DS. Just for fun and a bit of design/building experience and also with the idea that if we get round to doing some foamie racing that a cheap wing that I can cut might be a good thing so people can give it a try for very little cost. Maybe racing with one design could be a goer too as then it is just down to the pilot.

So this is to be just a tester, the first of many I would imagine! I set myself a couple of rules. Main rule is not to get bogged down it this. Just do it. Finish in two or three days max. I must use the first wings that are cut and not faff around with cutting cores. It must be cheap. So I am using blue foam and a pine spar from the local DIY (EPP version once I get a design that works). Use stock trailing edges. TE stock i have is not really the best but, see main rule.

Design 1.
Very simple swept wing. Central or twin fins. Profile PW51. 1500mm WS (59")
Basic planform.

Cut wings and glued together last night. One wing profile is a bit messed up towards the wing tip but, I stayed true to my rule and used it anyway(hope I don't regret it). Have made good progress so far today. Will post some photos later.

Misc / CNC hotwire foam cutting machine
« on: September 05, 2009, 14:05:09 PM »
So here's my new baby :D
No elevator, no ailerons, no rudder. Ok so it doesn't even fly!!

For those interested (that's you Bill)
The table is the Super Spartia design. Build from MDF, Alu tubes, Alu angles, threaded rod, PCB and nuts and bolts.
The card is an Axemotion. They don't make it anymore I don't think. It was the cheapest one around at the time. I would have gotten the famous MM2001 card but I couldn't find one that was complete then, just kits.
The motors are Sanyo Denky.
Software is GMFC

All in it probably cost a little over €200. The cards a bit more these days. I bought mine a few years ago.

I have to say a big thanks to Keith. Keith drilled the cut the MDF carriages and made the rails from the aluminium angles. I just had to assemble it all and wire everything up. Took three or four evenings to get everything working as it should and the same tweaking it. Well I'm still tweaking it really! A few setbacks along the way as usual but not too bad. Not a lot of info about my card which was the main issue.

Bill you asked me if it is worth the time and effort. Yes is the answer for me anyway. To never have to make another template is a wonderful thing and now if I want to cut a wing I set it up in the computer and know that what I will get is right. It makes a lot of designs easy to build. Wings, EPP models, Fuse parts for plugs and lost foam fuselages etc..
It's a very handy tool to have basically and hopefully one that will serve me well for many years.

If someone needs something cut and is not in a big rush than I am happy to do it. I have white foam, hopefully some blue stuff soon as well and am ordering EPP too.

Here one of the first wings I'm working on. It's a wing for the Wazeco. Different profile than the original just to see how it works out.
As you can see I've added a cut for the wing joiner, the servo lead and aileron hinge cutaway. They've now been covered in obechi. The ailerons were glassed on the inside to make them nice and stiff (easy Keith:?). Will add more photos soon.

One of our Asian distributers is now doing these ARTF vintage gliders.
We are doing an order with them for some other stuff and fancied getting one or two ourselves.
If anyone else is interested in one let me know ASAP.
These glider are available from a few places in US, OZ etc.. problem is the shipping! the boxes are over 2 metres long and 500mm wide and tall. This makes them VERY expensive to ship by air.
We are already doing an order by sea so we can deal with the customs and cargo handling fees etc..

The price will be around the €450 mark all in.

There is a good bit of info available online about these models below are some link to RCGroups threads

Misc / Composite course
« on: November 16, 2008, 23:25:23 PM »
Anyone know of any composite courses that are run in Ireland. Wouldn't mind a bit of a crash course or evening classes. I know a little at this stage from making fuselages etc.. be nice to learn a few new tricks without finding out by making the mistakes myself. There is some good forum threads and stuff out there but it's hard to fine good DVDs and books in english. There are lots of German stuff to be found alright! Anyone??

Slope Soaring / Racing League
« on: November 13, 2008, 17:36:53 PM »
So Fred. You are thinking of putting together a simple basic racing league?

Maybe keep it really open so we can all take part?

We could probably get 4/5 people out on a regular basis.

Standard 1000metre course or were you thinking of smaller?

What about classes? maybe a foamy and a standard open class?

Count me in. Anyone else into it?

PSS / Aermacchi PSS project
« on: September 03, 2008, 15:35:48 PM »
Hiya all just thought I'd share a project I have been working on and hope to get finished soon.
Aermacchi MB339 PSS. Span 1.625metre(64 inch)
Fiberglass fuse. Foam veneered wings.
I did the fuse layup a couple of months ago and finally got round to cutting the wings last night. Will take a bit of testing with the fuse layup to get the right compromise between weigh and strength and also the wing profile to see what is going to work best. Will finish this off over the next month or two whenever I'm at home and will keep you posted of my progress.
