Great Fred, Where will you be on wednesday? Myself and Ger Buckley could be convinced to join you for a flight.

There is a south to south westerly facing slope in kilkee. If you look to the highest point on the cliffs on the East side of the bay. Up behind the golf course. You can drive to the car park on the east side and hike up the rest of the way. Ger B flies there almost every weekend. The wind has to be spot on the slope for it to work.

Cheers

Hi Alan,

Same thing happened to me on a Flair Fokker DV11 I built a few years back. Putting a sock on the iron helped as I initially thought it was dirt rubbing off on the solarex from the face of the iron. Reducing the heat also helped. I think it had something to do with the glue bonding under too much heat. Burning basically as it only occurs at the point where the covering touches the wooden structure... you can see that in your pics.

If you are painting over it, it should not matter anywho.

Absolutely fantastic model you have there by the way. Well done.

Pics say it all.

I built the model from the Pat Teakle kit. Flies well. Great slope soaring machine. Achieves enormous height. Good Loops Good Stall turns. Brakes are 14" aluminium red anodised multiplex, very powerfull. Landing are easy. Have flown the model many times. Can be flown before purchase. Would make a good aerotow model.

€250

Hi Kieth,

Sorry Kieth, I trade in tralee market on thursday. I also have visitors calling here on wednesday along with the dodgy weather forecast. Things are not looking good this week. I am heading off on holiday this weekend too so Looks like I will have to wait until the september fly in at Mt L realistically.

Will smash you to bits then....

Hi lads,

A good night had by all on tounntine last night. One of our regular Shannon club flying sessions on the hill. I kept the ISR side represented, it's a tough job but somebody has to do it :)  Four of us flying. Huge lift. 20+mph winds from the south west. We were out on SW point. (My Favourite). :D

Here's the pics....

We got setup, note the windsock!! You could fly a brick in that lift....if you had a brick.
Models were Declans new FlyFly Salto, My Fox, Ger's ASK18, Phil's Teakle HP18. A good selection considering the howling gale.

Get the new Salto ready

So on with the flying.... Ger launching Declans brand new Salto. This thing flew amazingly well. Really Fast. Flew on rails and the smile on Decs face all night said it all.

Get the HP18 out there!!!

Oops the camera man is not as quick as the model.. :(

Got it this time...

So I launched Ger's ASK18 and that got the 3 lads flying. Looks like ger flew into the sun there. Not a good idea. Hang on!!! I am the only one not getting a flight here... Too busy taking photos... So that means I have to launch and fly the fox myself while taking photos of it.....ahmmmm :?:

Magic!!! It is launched and on a fly by... How did that happen??? :?

This starts a flyby for the camera competition...

Now that is just showing off...

What a great night... :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Paddy,

Just checked out Cularis... Looks a good choice. Should be a doddle to fly. And you can experiment with flaps and crow braking etc... Just down to a question of weather or not you like foamies or glass or all built up?? But that model will serve you well either way.

If there is one thing I have observed while flying gliders is there is no such thing as the perfect one. The conditions can change on you and all of a sudden the 20+mph wind that was flying your 4m scale model slackens off and you have to land in a hurry. Then you change to the 100" all built up model with a polyhedral wing and your flying in 8mph winds... only for it to get even lighter again by the end of the evening, and your now flying a 3m electric thermalling sailplane. That is why most glider guiders arrive up to the hill top with a car full of models. That and an obsessive compulsion to build and fly more and more models than any one man needs.. we all suffer from that bug

So get yourself a Cularis to start with and learn to fly slope. You are right. It is different to flying power but you will learn a hell of lot more about flight in the process. And the views are something else. Later on you can collect a fleet from a foamie combat wing to a 4m scale full house job.

see ya on the hills

Kieth,

I will invite Ger and his son Declan of course. We fly every wednesday evening on tounntine.

Open invitation to all there by the way.

Tomorrow night is the official shannon club gliding night so next wednesday will suit me and ger better. The shannon club meets every second wednesday on the hill you see.

I will say one thing for the foamies. This sniper is my first one. It cost me less than a round of pints. It flies great. And I look forward to bashing the hell out of it. It beats my €1000++ 4m fox any day of the week and this is why. If I divide the amount of flights I have had with the fox into the cost of getting it in the air the cost per flight is enormous....about €40/flight by my calcs... And 4 times out of 5 I do some small bit of damage every time I fly the fox. I also need a small pit crew to get the bloody thing launched. And then while flying it I am shaking at the knees.

Foamies are starting to look good... :?:

Hope to see you soon.

Hi Paddy.

DaveMc Here. I fly 4m models regularly here in the west on our local slope tounntine. Have been flying for over 10 years now. If you want a piece of advice regarding the type of glider you could choose to fly here is some 2p worth of it.

If the landing area is rough choose a T-tail design. That way the stab and elevator is less likely to get badly snagged up in the heather. I tore the elevator off a 4m fox like this.

Wingspan is all... There is no substitute. The more wing you have the better.

Brakes are a must. Either conventional airbrakes or better still crow braking. This is where the flaps go down and the ailerons go up and the elevator goes down to compensate for the ballooning effect of the flaps. You need a computer tranny to do this and at least 8 channels. Not all gliders can do it.

Choose a model with flaps if you can. It helps a lot in lighter lift and can also give you the added benefit of crow brakes.

And yes the bigger models fly better.

check out www.modellhobby.de for some nice gliders

Cheers
