And for Fred:

Have a look at scalesoaring uk. There in the Document area is a Horten IIIE for a motorized plane. The shape of the Wing should be the same as for the B,C, D and so on. Also the flaps and ailerons should be a bit differen, but it shouldn't be a problem for You, to adjust the drawings a bit.

I believe this construction will fly nice.

well, it's the wrong thread.. but chatting a bit must be allowed....

No Keith, no captains peek and white sneaker and I haven't any tatoos... But the grand old lady puts the cream on the cake in sailing. She was designed, when the baots where built for sailing, not for living on them. Otherwise no toilett, no kitchen only two beds, so there is no comfort.

Yes, I bought her as a nearly wreck, after building (and designing) several models of swedish squaremeter yachts. So after a while I got the Idea to sail such a boat in scale 1:1. Whereever we trailer her, people love this boat. She's a real beauty.

But now I started again in flying models. The next Plane will be a Pilatus B4 with 4m Span.

The last weeks I was successfull in flying my old Horten Models. So the future looks great. When there is Wind, I will be on river Weser, if there is no wind, You will find me on the airfield;-)

Well Keith,

I too believe, that pine is a not bad wood. The spars of my planes are made from pine, and the planks of my sailboat (15sqm Yacht) are from Oregon pine. Not everything should be made from oak and Teak....

please have a look here:

http://www.segelbootrefit.de/wordpress/2015/06/

I got the boat from an old man in Sweden, who wasn't any more able to take care of here. This grand old Lady is from 1939. After two years of renovating she looks nearly good enaugh for my standards. She sails great.

Nice to read, that lots of things didn't change in Ireland. Are You still active on Mt.Leinster and on Your little airfield? I believe some day I have to go to Ireland again. I just reactivated my planes some weeks ago and started flying again after 5 years of abstinece. It's exciting after such a long time;-)

Fred:

I will have a look for drawing or something similar. The aerodynamics are a bit complicated. You need in normal flight something like a bell shaped lift over the wing...

May be You translate with google the Tutorial for the Nurflügel Programm.

http://www.rc-network.de/magazin/artikel_10/art_10-059/art_059-01.html

For me it's some years ago and I today wouldn't be able to design such a plane properly. I need to learn again...

Best Regards

Hej Keith,

but I still remember You... My wife Heidi often talks about Your Landy... You still drive it?

Walter W. was from Austria. He wasn't with us in Ireland.

By the way Fred, Your printing job looks neat.

Scale / Horten XIV building thread
« on: May 26, 2010, 10:58:01 AM »
Well Keith,

the problem with those Hortens is the gliding ratio. They are faster than typical size-similar sail-planes. This makes landing so difficult. We use airbrakes to come down and in the last seconds. While landing, the plane faces very much the "bottom effect". It want's to glide and to glide and glide..... It's really not easy to land sometimes. :?

This "just stop" is in real quite nice fast and exciting.... It looks better in the video than in reality.

ähm the bigger the easier.... I feel, the bigger as more diffucult to land. See above. For example, You remember the little XII at Your airfield? This one is today easy, because in relation to the big one it gets down as fast as a stone.

Airfields can be rather short with a Hortenplane. But that's what I like, they are different from the rest 8)

Thank You Keith.

last weekend i've been with my friend Andrés. We had a great time together talking and flying our wings. His wife made a nice video of our XIV's together in the air:

Hi Fred,

don't be afraid. i went for Jeti this winter and don't have any problems. Works great and feels reliable. Made it switchable between 40 Mhz and 2G4.

The biggest problem for me was not having any more the long Antennae in front of me. Sometimes I lost my orientation

Well,

over the last days I did the maiden flights with a motor-center-section.

Surprise! It's flying!

Attached pictures are from yesterday. this was the fourth flight. I am getting used to it now and I am loosing the nervous feelings now.

The bungee-start:

in the air:

Arriving for landing:

She's a beauty in the air, pretty fast and she needs a lot of area for manouvres.

....as long You take care of oil and the regular teeth-belt exchange, You will be happy with this car. ......it's a VW-engine.

Mine run till today about 280.000 km without big problems.

Well Fred,

I hope this is a Diesel.... I am driving the Ford-version of this car as a Diesel at about 6,5 to 7.5 Liter per 100 km. I remember a friend with the same car with a gas engine..... He bought something else after a while.

Congratulations and welcome to the SGA-Family.

How to... / How to launch a large plane by myself
« on: March 29, 2010, 20:45:07 PM »
Hey Keith,

only 4 kg? I believed it could be 6 or 7 kg :?  Throw it away and be happy. For this kind of gliders You don't need the rubber really.

But I can tell You,  in my opinion bungee is the safest way to start anything. Look at the old real gliders in the 1920s and 30s. Bungee was obligatory!

I am not a good thrower.... At school I was happy, when the ball didn't hit my feet, when I throw it.  Another reason for me to bungee launch.

If You have perfect lift, as Fred describes or to be seen in the video with Chris, it's absolutely easy to "throw or to launch". But I can remember a day at my home slope (only 150km away from my home), when somebody wanted to hand launch any ASXXXX full fibre glass and came back with two nice parts of the fuselage....... That's the day I love my rubber

Just make some carefull trys with the plane in Your hand. If You have the feeling, it "wants" to fly, let it go. If not, wait for rubber from ebay.... No risk no fun.

Quote from: "Happy Days"

You see I don’t want to launch the plane up into the air, so-to-speak. I just want the bungee to push, (thrust) the plane out into the lift.

My plan is to  pull the plane back against the strength of the bungee. Then, holding the plane with one hand, and having my other hand on the Tx, release the plane and immediately put both hands on the Tx.

Yepp,

that's the way I do it over here. Just "throwing" the plane in the Lift at slope or make it fast enaugh, that it flies with motor power. I use it, because I have pushers at my wings, which could hit my hand while throwing the plane.

That's what always I tell the spectators. Never do "it" without a rubber

Here is a nice bungee launch:

Well a bungee....

Tell me, what's the weight of Your bird? I have so called "scale bungee" 7,35m lenght with a 4m rope.

http://www.emc-vega.de/epages/62405086.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/62405086/Products/87

What kind of fuselage has Your glider? If it's not the strongest one, I would prefer this one:

http://www.emc-vega.de/epages/62405086.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/62405086/Products/85

This should be enaugh for a goo start.

But look at Joe, I believe, he starts 4m planes alone too!?!

If there is enaugh lift, it shouldn't be a problem to hold it in one hand while starting. I've seen this very often.
