Slope Soaring / Retroplane... In Ireland !
« on: September 28, 2007, 14:47:19 PM »
Hi there,

1 or 2 years ago, we were talking, as a joke, to do the Retroplane meeting in Ireland (being French, living in Ireland, I was teasing a lot about the pubs and the smooth slopes we have around here !  )...
Well, we did not left the idea aside, and finally after checking the feasability, Retroplane 2009 will be held for the first time abroad, and that will be in Ireland.

That give us almost 2 years to get prepared and build a Vintage glider.
More information and booking (limited places) are here :

http://www.retroplane.net/retroplane2009/index-eng.htm

Don't hesitate to contact myself or Vincent if you have any questions regarding the event.

Slope Sites in Ireland / Mount Leinster
« on: September 25, 2007, 13:55:31 PM »
Hi there,

So, in the continuing quest for the perfect spot, last week end, we've decided with Joe to have a proper look at the Mt Leinster slopes !

With the new motorway, it's only about 1h20 from Dublin now..  :D

Mt Leinster is situated on the border of Wexford and Carlow.A few minutes south-west of Bunclody. There is a signposted road on the edge of Bunclody town on the Carlow road. This will take you all the way to Nine Store car park.
Their are a couple of west slopes to fly at Mt Leinster. The first is at the Western car park.Following the road from Bunclody you will see a left turn signposted for Mt Leinter mast(this is the road to Nine Stones), just past this on the left is the western car park. The slope here is a pretty good, not that high but quite steep.Lots of lift in a good blow.Only problem is there isn't much of a landing zone! They have just cut down a lot of trees behind the slope which may make landings easier. That and brakes! I usually only fly foamies here for the above reasons. This could be a good slope for 60" racing/combat as the slope is steep and the lift zone is close in.

Western Carpark / Slope :

Next is the Western Ridge.Following the road from Bunclody you take the left turn signposted for Mt Leinter mast(Nine Stones road). This road brings you along the western bowl. There is a gate and a parking zone on the left. You have two options, the slope across from the gate flys pretty well in west and a little north or south of west. All models can be flown here. The landing can be a little tricky as there is still lift on top where you want to land.Their are a few pockets in the lift though and a few go arounds will show them. Those with brakes will have no problems.
The second option is to walk up the slope behind the gate/car park. You get lift off the slope you just walk up here and the slope mentioned above .Great big landing zone covered in ferns here.Suitable for any glider.

Mount Leinster itself. This is where the RTE mast is.Again follow the route as above until you get to the Nine Stone car park and the gate leading up to the mast.Unfortuneatly this gate is locked most of the time and you will probably have to walk up! Along the road there are large west and south-west facing slopes.I have only flown here once and just for a few minutes as I was worried about getting locked in.

A word of caution! Mt leinster is a very popular spot for Hang-gliders/Paragliders.We have a good relationship with these guys and we want to keep it that way.Stay out of their way and respect their airspace! People come first always!! Always talk with them before flying and come to an arrangement. We can all enjoy the slopes, safely.

Our plan at the beginning was to walk up to the Mt Leinster mast to have a look (and test the slope with models as well !) Our aim was to find a slope where you can fly other thing than epp flying wings and small gliders. Basically, a good decent slope for all type of models...

A paraglider/hang glider event due to be held at the mast stopped us to go on the top, so we've decided to go on top of the hill we can see when we fly at the 9 stones...

Well... What a slope !!! We can almost fly 360 degrees (South East need to be confirmed / tested, but should not be an issue with "week end " gliders (well, big scale one might be an issue...)

So, here are som photos now !

The "old" Westerly Slope. That is the slope along the rad to go to the Nine Stones. You have kind of a car park in the half way. Suitable for all size models ! You have an airport to land with nice grass.

With a nice view :

The North, North East slope at the Nine Stones Go along the west slope, you arrive at a carpark and the Nine Stones. Park here, and you are at the N-NE slope. Be carefull, this is also a launch / landing site for the para/hang gliders ! They have priority at any time ! But usually, they launch from there, then, after a few soar on the slope, go fly elsewhere... You can fly all type of glider from that slope. Tourist area, so same thing, be carefull of the walkers passing by !

Scale / Backstrom EPB-1C "Flying Plank"
« on: September 20, 2007, 09:43:48 AM »
Hi there,

So, here are a few photos of my "latest" build !

Well, I've decided  before going to Retroplane, that I needed a backup plan in case the Opel Rak wouldn't fly... So, a week before heading to France, on the Retroplane forum, i've contacted Claude L telling him that I was interrested in his plan for this flying wing (the full thread, in French, can be seen HERE )
Note that as far as I know, Claude is selling the plan for this wing. Contact him or myself if interrested !
Scale is 1/4, and the wing span is 2 mtrs.

Well, a flying wing, you just have a big wing to build ! So, in a week, that should do it !

A photo of the real thing :

As usual for me now, I've cutted all the pieces with the cnc machine. Put the file in the machine, wait 1 hour, and here you go with a nice kit :

Of course, you start with the .. wings !

No comments here... The ribs are made of 3mm balsa. The only tricky part is the wing tips, due to the profile used (autostability..)

For the fuselage, well, like the Opel, it's really small, and is built quickly :

So, after 2 days, you have this :

Now, I can't find more pictures of the building  :?: , so, more to come of the finish product tomorrow !

Just for the story, I've brought the Backstrom with me at Retroplane, finished and painted, just the servos to be plugged... But too busy during the meeting, I did not take time to complete the job. And the Opel was flying too !  :D

Retroplane 2008 is already knocking at our door (yes, already !  :D )

The number of pilots is limited to 70, and there is only 5 places left already ! (you said success ?   ).
A waiting list is in place with 10 to 20 spots.

This year, the meeting will be held in the South East of France, close to the Mediterranée.

Not convinced yet ? Just take a look at the pictures here :

Scale / 1/13 scale Grunau Baby IIb
« on: June 06, 2007, 08:49:38 AM »
Hello there,

Here is my new challenge.. Yep, sometimes, on the Retroplane Forum, well, I must shut up and don't take challenges !!  :D
Vincent had a simple idea... Why not make mini / micro scale models, but the same way as the bigger one ? Let's say, a maximum scale of 1/10 ? Who want to try ?
And that's enough for me to build another glider !
Vincent, at the same time, is building a wonderfull Cimbora ! ( http://www.retroplane.net/cimbora/page1.htm )

So, here we go !

First, the scale has been choosen, because of my smallest battery pack... The pack must fit into the second former.. That gave me the scale ! 1/13, that's around 1.20 mtrs wing span...

All the formers :

The pen give the size...

The smallest one :

All the front formers are made with 3mm plywood... Rear ones, are in 2mm balsa.

Taking shape...  :D

The entire glider is sheeted with 0.4mm plywood, then a coloured varnish is applied (teak).
All surfaces are scale ! The covering is made with Japan Paper and a mix of water and white glue (around 50/50)

Only 2 servos (9grs) as the glider only have rudder / elevator functions.. We will see later... And it's not a big job to make a wing with ailerons...

Nice eh ?!    :D

More to come !!

And a bit more pictures here :

Misc / Flight Model Simulator - FMS
« on: February 14, 2007, 09:10:28 AM »
Hi there,
Totally forgot about that, but this post is more for Error (and everybody else in fact   ), but here is the link to the free Model simulator to have some training at home between 2 fights at the slope : Click here - 6 Mo
Good to have some reflex before / between 2 flights.
If you have a radio with a cable that you can plug to your computer, that's even better.
Otherwise, you can find some USB radio on the Internet for a relatively cheap price (think that's around 20 - 30 euros)

Enjoy !
