strange thing happened today went from being in a thermal to losing all radio contact and smashing the model
no idea what went wrong checked battery 85% power left done a range check all ok
i use a spektrum AR6255 receiver with a Turnigy SBEC regulator and flightpower 7.4 volt 1345 mah lipo battery
and the model was a dick edmonds 100" algebra

i'm gutted   thermals where good  and was having a ball

What a Bars***d! All the worse when it’s not your plane!

I remember when I had my very first glider flight. It was one of Joe’s polyhedral models. Flying off the west slope on Big L, the wind got a bit strong and started blowing the plane back towards the slope. Further and further back  it came. Then suddenly it just seemed to be pushed back over my head and disappeared over the forest!

“Er,….Joe, you know that model you lent me 20 minutes ago? Well it’s just disappeared somewhere over a hundred acres of forest land.   ”

If you lost control and the model was in line of sight all the time & the battery was 85% charged my trail of thought would go towards the rx or the sbec.

i've flew this receiver in another thermal model and never had any problems, come Monday it will be back with horzion
the sad thing is i've been flying this model on those orange receivers you get off ebay for a few quid and never had any problems and the only reason i changed was i was to fly in a 100" competition last weekend

you could fix the model but you're just adding extra weight the both wings are creased as well  :( so i would say it's a right off will change it into a slope model

as for the battery i checked it on the tester and both cells are showing good voltage and capacity

the sbec well how would you ever check if there was something not right that was my second or third flight when that happened can regeulators over heat ??

High speed switching regulators don’t normally suffer with “Thermal Dissipation” problems. (Please pardon my lapsing into pompous sounding drivel  ) That’s one of their main advantages over older type  ‘Linear’ regulators. (They’re also smaller and lighter than linear regs‘) But there are plenty of other things that can go wrong with them.

Just as an aside, switching BECs (regulators) tend to emit high levels of RF noise than can effect 35Mhz rx’s. Not a problem in your case Andy, but as I said there are other things that can go wrong inside a SBEC.

Hmmm, if you’ve flown the rx in other models without any probs it kinda suggests it’s okay. Have you used this SBEC before? If not then I’d say that’s potentially where the problem is, even if it works okay now there could be an intermittent problem in it.

It’s very unsatisfying when you can’t get to the bottom of a problem isn’t it!

hey keith
i have a few of these regulators now in other models but i must say this is the first time i've used one on a good days flying
i'm gonna look into seeing if i can return it to the supplier and see if there is some sort of test they can do on it

i have flightpower regulators and cheaper jp perkins ones as well

sad thing is i've been flying this model in preparation for a 100" competition on the 9th of september

up side to all this i bought a new algebra on ebay the other day  :D

New Algebra er? So every cloud has a silver lining. 8)

Electrical items with intermittent faults are a pain in the arse to sort out. Sometimes they work well, sometimes they don’t work at all. (Bit like women)

Good Luck in the comp. Hope it’s sunny for you, but don’t hold your breath!

module was ok and passed all the tests  :D
the receiver was a little short on the range check so they replaced it with a brand new one

Do you thnk you just flew too far away then Andrew, if the RX range was reduced? Or was something else happening?

still think you may have a microwave link cutting through the field
