Ok, so far, we are 3 from Ireland that have planned to go to the Wasserkuppe :D
Why don't we try to do the trip together (share the ferry, driving etc etc... And more fun as well !)
Basically, what are your plans ? :?:
-
I'd be interested in a shared trip Fred. Not got model finished yet, but was planning on going regardless of whether I can fly or not. Chance of a lifetime to fly at the Wasserkuppe.
What route are you thinking of?
Ireland to France and drive or Ireland to UK to Belgium and drive?
-
Hey Bill,
Wasserkuppe is just a bit further than the year we had Retroplane in the Vosges. So, so far, my plan is to take the ferry to Cherbourg and drive accross France. Some good motorways there, so no problemo.
And I'll have a GPS this year ! (Ok ok Joe... )
That's my plan anyway, but if you decide to come with me (and others!) we can maybe plan a more straight route and share the driving, rent a van or something like that. Lots of options :D
-
Definitely interested.
Minibus might be the way to go
-
hi Fred & bill
Count me in, I may get a plane ready for the event, maybe one of your short kits.
-
I'm going too hopefully. But I won't be going with you guys. I will be flying over and staying in a hotel nearby. I have relatives that live an hour and half's drive away. I was thinking of shipping my glider over to them and collecting it.
-
As always I can't really say for sure if I'll be able to make it this far in advance. You can count me in for now.
That would be six from Ireland! Pretty feckin good I'd say

hi all,
with all the chat developing about retroplane 10 i decided to sign on the forum and add my tuppence worth. i intend travelling over with my wife lillian. we'll ferry to fishguard, take the tunnel to france and spend a few days working our way to der wasserkuppe. we'll travel by campervan and hope to arrive on site on thursday. i'll have 2 gliders...a slingsby prefect and a reiher. both models are about 3m span. hope to meet you lads before then though. hope santa brings lots of airplane goodies.

Hey Gerry ! Welcome to the forum ! :D
Ok, so you are doing your own thing to go to the Wasserkuppe ? :?:
John, Bill, will be good to join us to Retroplane :D But keep in mind that you need a post 1960 model to participate, but also, and most importantely, need to register to the event ! As of today, there are only a few spots left.
But just to go and fly at the Wasserkuppe before / after the event, totaly worth the trip anyway IMHO ! :D
Any other takers ?
As for the trip.. I guess that will depend how many are going to do the trip together :?:
-
Fred,
I'm working to complete my KA-3 and get registered (hopefully there will still be spaces!) Even if I don't get registered I still want to go.
Can we fly before and after the event? If we go via France we could fly at Cherbourg too.
-
Hey Bill,
True, we can maybe organized something in France too between us :?:
I know the Cherbourg lads, so I guess that will depend on what's everybody wants to do, but that is easy to organize :D
Do a slope tour.. We can go to Britany see my buddies at the Menez Hom, birthplace of VTPR as we know it, then Cherbourg or something like that :?:
-
That sounds like a plan Fred
-
Hi guys
That sounds great 'a slope tour' hi Fred can I be a roadie for our European tour and hold back all your screaming fans as we fly high across the various french slopes
-
Can I play bass, seeing as we don't have one
-
What we really need is some singers. We have Fred (Phil Collins, ex drummer turned frontman) Marie. Maybe you could whip out a few Maiden classics Bill
-
Don't know about the Maiden. What about some Deep Purple or Motorhead?
Bill (Lemmy) Scott!
-
I'm in for some Deep Purple ! :D
Doing some aerobatics listening to Child in Time... =P~
John, if you know of a few groupies... \:D/
-
Bot a bad choice Fred, Start off with some nice big gentle aero's during the ballady bit at the start and drop in to some wild VTPR when it speeds up near the end.
What abot a bit of Speedfreak?
-
My god, what a bunch of head bangers you are!( :D )
Why not use something sophisticated like Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries….used to great effect in “Apocalypse Now“
(Valkyries were buxom scantily clad Nordic women warriors,……ooooo I do like a buxom woman with generous thighs   )
Waltz’s also work very well with flying sequences’ (In my opinion)
Keith
-
Ah, your educated "Garden of England" upbringing showing through Keith!!
My headbanging days are long over, but I well remember not being able to move my head after a night at an Iron Maiden, Motorhead or Thin Lizzy concert :D
(Perhaps something from the Holst Planet suite would do?) :?:
-
Hmmm, Gustav Holst :?: …………..how very civilized of you Bill. I take back all I’ve been thinking about you
-
I'm a rock and blues man at heart Keith.
Led Zeppelin, ACDC, ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Metallica. Some John lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton and Chris Williams band, The Average Blues Band. A wee bit of Jazz. Charlie Parker.
As you said, Wagners Ring, Holts Planet Suite and some Tchaikovsky.
Eclectic at best
-
OK, as I finished early today, I started a little research for the trip.
From Cherbourg to Ehrenberg (campsite) is 1100Km (~700 miles), so that's probably 2 days driving. Google maps is estimating 10 hours driving time.
I suppose the next question is whether we convoy with a few cars or do we look in to hiring a minibus and all travelling together. That is going to depend largely on whether we all plan going for the same legth of time?
Personally, I don't think it's worth going unless we go for at least 10 days. (4 days travel and 6 days at Retroplane and any optional locations on the way back)
Comments?
Suggestions?

Hi Bill,
Went I went to Nice for Retroplane, that was a 1300km drive from Cherbourg ! So if we are 2 or 3 drivers (or more!) that should do it easily :D And I had some mountain roads on top of that!
I would prefer to go all in one car/van/bus, as this will be easier, and certainly cost less on the ferry, and will also be part of the experience :D Like a school trip or something like that ! :P
So, I'd say 2 days travel including the ferry. Depending when we arrive, we can certainly do a convoy with the guys from Cherbourg/Normandy :?:
I'm good for 10 days :D
-
I'm up for 10 days, need to check with John how long he can take.
What about anyone else planning to go? Numbers will determine the type of vehicle we would need. If it's only the 3 of us, we'd get away with a mid size van. Anymore and we're looking at a mini bus.
Do you want to look at pricing vans/mini buses in the South and I'll check it out up here?
I'd have no problem driving to a pick up point in the south and leaving the car there. John and I could probably just use the one vehicle to get down.
I think we ned to get moving on this as soon as Jan 2010 arrives to sort it all out in time.
-
Hi Guys!
I'm hoping to see you at the Wasserkuppe, but I'll be coming up from Central France (Limousin)
It's the only way I'll EVER get this Minimoa finished!

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering were you lads are going to stay down there ?
I will probably go there for couple days just to witness the Event :)
As for travel arrangement, I am goint to take a plane from Dublin to Hahn,
then drive from there.

Hi All,
Just out of curiosity. Who is going to Retroplane in the Wasserkuppe?, even just as a spectator. I know me and Fred are going. Anyone else?
Alan.

Been looking forward to it all year and then plans changed for the worse :(
