grunau baby 11b (mark 2)

gerryb:
update on grunau baby.

i ran into some bother last year while working on the air brakes. clumsy fingers and fairly delicate pivot arms don't go well together.  i had the a/b's working nicely, then i dropped a screwdriver into the  a/b well and while getting it out, i broke one of the pivot arms. 'oh dear' is a polite version of what i said!!!  i tried to make new ones from birch ply which were stronger, but they were never quite right.

so the whole build ground to a halt for months until a friend of mine made me a set of arms from aluminium exactly as per the originals. problem solved.

now i was back on track,  building was resumed and in the space of a few weeks the model was finished and covered.

at the moment i'm putting on the primer coat of paint, so should be gloss coating soon.  the colour scheme is basically white with some coloured trim.  my problem has always been paint creeping under the masking tape and causing all sorts of grief.  if anyone can suggest a better type of masking tape or technique, i would be delighted to hear from you.

a few photos of the gb as it is parts of the a/b's
parts in place
parts ready for assembly
and ready for painting

That looks fantastic Ger!
Just can't wait to see it finished and in the flesh

(on a side note, the A/B arms are in 2mm epoxy now)

gerryb:
thanks fred, epoxy is a much better idea

EI1638:
Hi Ger,

I am absolutely no expert at painting, but I found that Tamiya masking tapes improved my edges  enormously. Tight curves are still a major challenge for me, but gentle curves and straight lines are now almost pleasant to mask off and paint.

Maybe someone who is better at painting can chime in here.

In case anyone is wondering - finishing models is the part of the build I dislike most, and I reckon it shows.

Chris

gerryb:
thanks chris, appreciate that.

where can i get tamiya tape? my lines are straight, so that tape could be exactly what i need
