Anyone for flying this weekend (26/27 Feb)
« on: February 24, 2011, 16:48:42 PM »
The winds are looking set for a spot of flying on the Big L this weekend! :D
If the forecasts are to be believed the west slope could be usable for gentle flying on Saturday.
On Sunday the wind is supposed to be a little stronger and from the NW. This could mean the west slope would be flyable again, or, if the wind was more north then west, (if you get my drift) then the north slope could be usable.

There could be a slight awkwardness there however, because the Paragliding lads like to use that north slope.(They don’t seem to be able to use the west slope.)
They tend to assemble in the early afternoon. So if the wind is from the north I’d suggest getting there early on if you want clear skies to fly in.

This ‘clash of use’ seems to be a sign of the times as more and more people take to the skies. :!:

Oh well,…..poo happens :(

Maybe it's time to take up paragliding so you have something to do if/when they're using the airspace!

I just might.

Hi Keith

Looks good for this weekend, Richard,Andrew, myself and hopefully big Bill will be flying Moneymore slopes this Saturday. We have had a talk to some of the paragliders in the past who use these slopes, and most are willing to cooperate with the RC pilots, however there are the odd dick heads who spoil it for everyone!!!

That’s a good outcome John.

Although I don’t believe there have been any formal discussions between the paragliders/Hang gliders here, generally we co-exist.

The problem, as you say, is that there are sometimes the ’rouge’ elements. So, I find myself constantly looking around the skies considering if any paragliders are likely to get too close to my model. After a time I get tired of ‘defensive flying’ and pack up. Then the paragliders have the sky to themselves.
That’s why I prefer west or south winds, those slopes are always paraglide-free on big L.

So, enjoy your day up on Moneymore and I hope it’s a little more windy for you than it is here at this moment. I think for me, it’s going to be a day for big winged models, not much lift so far. :(

Good luck lads,

Keith

Just in from a brilliant afternoon at moneymore.
Just John and myself made it !
The other 2 are saving themselves for Mount Leinster!

Winds were 20mph plus !!!!!!!!!!

Amazing lift on the North West slope

Only got a few snaps as flying came first.
Here is my old mate JP , what a laugh we had.

Good to see it Richard. Thanks for the picies (Such a good looking pair of  dudes - :?:  )

Not sure what BB (Big Bill) and Andrew think they are saving themselves for????? Surely, practise makes perfect, doesn’t it?

I also had a good time. Sorry no picies, it’s hard to photograph and fly. The wind was slightly more westerly down here, straight onto the slope at between 30 and 50 Km/h over the two to three hours I was there.
Phase 6, Whisper (2 mtr mouldy) with full ballast,  and a 4 mtr ASW all had an aerial view of Big L. today.
A bit chilly up there, I could really feel the difference when the sun went behind the clouds that kept passing by, but that’s all part of the fun.

If the wind stays like this I might even venture up there again tomorrow for a while.

Anyway, glad to see someone’s getting some flying in lads. (I think those guys in the West are still in hibernation. WAKEY WAKEY! Is there any life west of Tipperary?  )
