Motor not responding
« on: April 24, 2011, 20:59:10 PM »
I am having an issue with my motor on my electric extra, just setting it up for its maiden flight.

Firstly when i connect battery the speed controller beeps twice, then  i go full trottle and it beeps again, finally when i power down no beep.
It should start turning when i apply some trottle but nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

Bill it is the Extra you sold me, you may know the correct arming of the motor.

Thanks in advance

Anthony

Here is a picture of the model. Will have to wait a bit longer for its maiden flight.

Hi Anthony,

Maybe basic things to check, but have you tried revesing your throttle ?
Education is important, but flying RC planes and gliders is importanter!

Normally in matters like these Anthony the problem is something relatively simple, as Fred inferred.

The first thing I’d go for is to check if you have the throttle lead in the correct position in the rx. If you’re using the Futaba equipment I sold you, that’s the third position down from the top of the rx. (Channel No. 3)

If you’re using a different rx to the one I sold you, have you “linked” the rx to the tx?

The ESC connector might not be of Futaba type with a flange on one side, so make sure the plug is in the right way round. (With the metal pins on the connector showing towards the top of the rx.)

If you’re still not getting any luck, ensure that you’re using a battery of the correct number of cells.

I’ll bet the problem turns out to be something simple!

Keith, have checked everything over but it all seems fine and setup ok!

Bill, the speed controller is the 'HiModel' Fly 12A.

Just a bit of checking online and see that the speed controller is recommended for a 2-3cell lipo.....I have a one cell lipo 220mAh that i was using. Maybe this is the problem?  :?:

I have a two cell lipo at work I will get it tomorrow and try it tomorrow after soldering on some connectors.

There's your problem Anthony    The ESC is 'looking' for an extra cell (higher voltage) and untill it finds one it won't arm the motor.

Just as an extra thought Anthony. I notice you inferred that you had been intending to maiden your plane with a one cell 220mAh battery………..

Even with a 2 cell lipo, 220mAh won’t give you very much flight time. :(

I don’t know what size 2 cell battery you have at work, but if it’s much smaller than about 1000mAh be prepared for a short flight. (And that statement assumes that your 2 cell battery is in good condition.)

yep minimum 2-3 cell lipo. I reckon you'll only get about 90 - 120 secs out of a 220mAh. Balance might be a problem too with the smaller battery. I had a 2 cell 800 ready for it
