Sailplanes International AXLE
an oldie but a goodie.so i'm told.
looks like a speedy sloper, interesting thing about this glider is that it has all moving wings instead of ailerons!
i got this from a friend of mines dad.he used to fly slope around dublin until ten or fifteen years ago.he gave me a bunch of stuff in various states.most of which need an aweful lot of work to get going again.
the Axle is unfinished and in good nick.it has a molded fuse(fibreglass and polyester apparently)and obechi covered foam wings.the tail is already done, but i might remove it and redo.it's a little wobbly.wings need sanding and covering.the radio gear has to go in and i'll probably give the fuse a light sand and a coat of paint.

at the moment it's two servos.one for the wings and one for the elevator(all moving stab).no rudder.might put two servos in for the wings if i like it and it flies well.two servos will give me a few more options like differential and linking the wings like flaperons.could be interesting!!!

here's how it looks at the moment.will finish it off in a few weeks and have it ready for Cork

Someone used to fly an Axle occasionally at Kilakee several years ago. Looked great in the air as I recall. I don't have anything ready to fly at the moment but I plan to get something ready for Cork. Probably just a foam wing of some sort and maybe revive my Obelix.

hiya Aidan
hoping to have the Axle ready for Cork too.have done a bit of work on it since the above pictures.covered the wings, glassed the stab and rudder and made a new canopy.am away for ten days and left the pics that i had intended sticking up here at home
have heard great things about the Axle, this one has been sitting around in a box for a long time.now it's time has come.so lets hope  :?

what sort of a beast is the Obelix?

The Obelix is a very old aerobatic flying wing design. I think it was designed by Chas Gardiner and published in one of the UK magazines in the early 80's. My dad used to fly one with an OS 10 in the nose and I've got one I built 10 or more years ago that hasn't flown in a very long time. I think it's fixable but I have to dig it out. I don't have any pictures handy.

Axle update

wings have been filled, sanded and covered.Ferrari red even!

original stab was removed.filled, sanded and glassed with light fiberglass and Poly-C.it's a water based industrial varnish.not as hard as epoxy but,way lighter, way easier to use, dries fast,is water based, not much smell and not much mess.put a bunch of coats on.15 minutes to dry each coat(in hotpress).seams to work pretty well.

wet sanded fuselage and stab.couple of coats of red and two coats of clear varnish

nearly there!

next:
fit stab and elevator servo(aileron servo installed).fill edges of canopy to get a nice snug fit, sand and paint.set-up radio and balance
