What is a good slope for a venue? Reflections, debates...
« on: January 30, 2008, 15:59:52 PM »
Well, Mt Leinster is more far south than that !
Anyway, as I said in one post somewhere else, what we need, is a decent spot and that's seal the deal !
So far, we don't have a lot of options from where I am  :?

So, we need a spot where, when you move 10 or more people, they will be able to fly, and not only foamies ! The only thing that should stop one of our slope "event" will be the rain or fog !
I'm prospecting slopes at the moment, but a bit of help will be more than welcome !  :D

For instance, I don't think Dublin (Kilakee) is a good spot for that as if you organise something, and the wind is East, that's it for the day, you can drive home !
I also want to avoid the phone call, mail, forum check 24 hrs before the actual outing to be sure of the actual location the event will be (wind depending...).

Mt Leinster for example, you just drive to it, you will be sure to fly whatever model size, wind direction and so on.. Peace of mind ! I wish we have more spot like that one (they exist !), but so far, I don't have any other proposition...
Education is important, but flying RC planes and gliders is importanter!

Hey Fred, can you fly Mt Leinster in an east wind.

No worries, but, while we are at it, here is my point of view...

You can't ask people to drive 4 or 5 hours somewhere for at the end :

- have a slope where you can't fly what you brought / have,
- drive another 30, 40 mins or more, because another slope is better for today's wind,
and certainly more examples of that type, but you got my point.

To whom belong the event doesn't matter, at the end, you ask people to come somewhere to fly gliders, but as I say, if I spend more time driving around than flying, don't worth it.
I'm happy to go in Kerry or somewhere else, if I'm sure that I will actually fly what's on my car boot. And I'm sure I'm not the only one !

If you want people to get interrested to the hobby, or to go to meetings, you, we need to find decent place to welcome them, and have an event in good conditions.
Bill is coming from NI.. If he can't fly when he arrive, or ask him to drive another leg, will he come back ? Worth the assle ?
Same for you coming from Kerry, or us going to fly with you.

Anyway, the discussion is open, but we don't really have a lot of inputs, but maybe I have a more "continental" approach of the thing...  :?:

Yep !  :D  The only wind that may give us difficulties (low lift) would be the SE direction (if you try to flywhere we were the last time if you remember), but a 10 mins walk to the "bowl" and your problem is solved  :D

Hi Fred
I am wondering whether Mt Leinster has always a sunny blue sky, because I will not make 1000 of kilometers to find a foggy and rainy slope  :!:
