Some of you may have seen this already. But check this out. It's a 1/2 scale Austria Elephant made by some Swiss guys. I think the full size Austria had a 30m wingspan. So that would give this Model a 15m wingspan. Big or what.

15m is standard sailplane class. They shoulda built a 1:1 Ka6 and be done with it. Maybe they couldn't find a big enough wheel.

Fred, how about a 3:2 Ka3. That'd be 15m too...

  A Ka3 bigger than the original ! Can be nice !  :P

Not sure if that flew already, but check out the certification video.... Big cracks sound can be heard when they load the wings, and they all look concerned !  :?

Still don't see the point of doing something the size of a full size glider, and as they discovered during the certification process, at that size, that fall into the full size safety domain, so 2 small screws to retain the wing panels, is obviously a no go for the guy that do the certification, so as the carbone tube and small incidence pin
If someone can understand German...   :?:
Education is important, but flying RC planes and gliders is importanter!

Hi,

please have a look here:

http://www.flyhard.ch/bauberichte/bauberichte.html

The page is written in german (what a beautifull language  ), but when You klick on the menues on the left side, You'll find some picture galleries of building big models.

These are 3 guys, who built only real big models. The building of the Austria begun in Summer 2008.

I do not really understand the reason to built so big. May be when my eyes are getting older, I need such big planes   For the next time I'll sta with my boomerangs :D

Yes, talking of boomerangs Lothar, when are you going to show us some videos of your's flying :D

Don't want to hear any excuses. ( Ask Hedi to hold the camcorder while you fly the boomerang.)

Or, if you are feeling very adventurous, you hold the camcorder and let Hedi fly the boomerang!!!  (That would raise your adrenalin levels  )(And Hedi's too!)

Sehr gut mein Freund! ……(Sorry, I can’t get on with German,………especially those words with 20 syllables in them. :!:  :?  I think I‘ll stick to English……..a much easier language. )(For me anyway!)

I find it amazing that those planes are so stable despite not having any vertical surfaces. Tell me Lothar, can the Horten's roll and loop?

Hi Keith,

Yes, they can roll and loop. The Horten II was in the 1930's often used for aerobatic-demonstrations. My little Horten XII (You've seen it on the airfield, when we meat the first time) is also able to do it. I tried it when the plane was high in the air, because I am a bad pilot. But it works.

With my Probe1 I made loopings sucsessfull. But the problem with those "high aspect ratio" planes is, that they are often not strong enaugh.

If You are interested I could make a litle building-picture-thread of the newest IG-Horten-projekt. It will be the Horten XIV. This was a never flown Clubglider designed in beginning 1945 by Reimar Horten. I build it in plywood.

Well Allan,

I always felt, that modelling has to do with miniaturizing...... That's wrong I believe

Yes, that’s a good idea Lothar. Show us all how you make these wonderful flying machines. :)

And while you’re using your camera, take some pictures of your working area / workshop and post them on this forum in the section: Techniques > Misc > I’ll show you mine…If you show me yours!
I want to see if you are a tidy worker, like Vincent  .....or an untidy worker like Fred :(

By the way, Joe has an enormous one (Workshop) but he is too embarrassed to show it because it's even more untidy than Fred's :D  :D
(Come on Joe, post some pictures of your workshop. We could all do with a laugh! )

Well after looking again on the Austrain Elefant of M. Frey, I immediately decided to build my next glider in a 1:0.5 scale
