Bungee Launch
« on: May 26, 2014, 13:47:22 PM »
Hi All,

I was speaking to the lads on the slope yesterday about using a bungee launcher for flat field launching.... I've had a look on line and most people are advising building a frame and a pedal release for a 20 foot long bungee with nylon tied to the end of the bungee for hooking onto the plane.... Any advice lads? What do you do for this type of launching?

Hi Stephen,

Never tried a foot release. When I’ve done bungee launching I just held the model against the strength of the bungee and then released it from my hand at shoulder height.

Never really took to flat field gliding, not my ’cup of tea’.

Stephen,
I suspect the ones you're looking at are more for launching fast electrics & EDF's, where all they're wanting to gain is airspeed not height. They use the frame and pedal release because of the power of the bungee used and speed of the model meaning they want both hands on the sticks from the start

A glider bungee would normally be 15 - 30m  of bungee elastic or surgical rubber, 100m'ish of monofilament fishing line, a parachute and a hook. It should be stretched 35 - 70 paces depending on the rubber and will then "kite" the model up rather than hurtling it in to the sky

Hi Bill,

Would you have a steer on the size of the chute? It looks small in the video ie not big enough to cause a drag on the launch?

I'll check mine tomorrow Stephen. It's rigged so that when under tension it's pulled tight closed. When the pressure comes off it opens[/b]
