Road trips / Cheapest/best/fastest way to Irleland with my van
« on: January 29, 2010, 13:58:27 PM »
just learned that I will have another meeting in Dublin in September again. So I better buy that box... :)

~0°C, 5-6 bft, 25cm of snow - would you go soaring tomorrow with conditions like these? :?:

Have a nice weekend! :)

Hey Ed,

sounds amazing. Well, with this box - maybe I will make it to Ireland again. Just my van won't...

I would be interested in some pics from SA as well!!!

Greetings,

Karl

Hi Ed,

this box is amazing - I should really look into that (next business trip will come for sure) Where did you go? How many planes did you take? However, I definitely want to come back with MY van to Ireland sometime but it doesn't look good for 2010. And yes, I would sleep in the van, but it just needs to mine (you know I have modified it to quite a decent camper).

Thank you for your post - Tell more about your trip!!

Greetings to Fergal

Karl

Thank you all for your coments.
I've been playing with Excel a bit. Taking all the costs (diesel for 3400kms, ferries, toll roads) it is probably much cheaper (and much less time consuming) to come by plane and mail or just take some gliders in a box and get a rental car.
Best alternative I think is to forget about this one week and come to Ireland for at least 3 weeks, than it's all worth it. But since we were in Scotland last summer and it rained 98% of the time (I can confirm that Norfolk Line is a good one, Stephan, and in addition, Munich-Dunkirk takes forever :?) - I have a hard time to convince my lady to again head north this year.:?:
But well, 2011 is save I guess - In the end it wouldn't be the same without my van...

Damn it - why is Ireland that far away?? :!:  :!: seems like I have to look for some slopes in Portugal now...

Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you all!

Dear All,

it's your fault, you have been too nice, so I want to come back
The thing is - I would like to come with my van and bring every model I can find in my basement. My government accepted slight changes in holiday planning. This freed one week in May.
Does it make sense to come by car and ferry to Ireland for only one week (~1700km one way)?

When would be the very best time? Should I go via the UK or take a direct ferry from France? - any recommendations for ferries?

« on: December 11, 2009, 13:29:37 PM »
Hi Keith!
Yes, I think this was in September....sorry for that, no pictures from the last weekends - >too cold here (and way to busy) - so I hope for xmas holidays but temperatures are supposed to go down quite significantly. We'll see.

Have a nice weekend!

I bought a used ASW 17 once (when I was 16 or so) - after 14 years in the basement, I finally flew it this year - well not last weekend  - but it was a weekend!
This slope is located exactly above the birthplace of the pope...amazing lift there

Small video of the first flight,

Greetings from Munich and sorry for the non-irish post...but I just like that pic...

Hey Guys!

It was amazing to meet you all! Despite the bad forecasts it was not too bad at all and I really enjoyed it a lot. It is more or less decided that I will come back for a week or so in May next year (got approval from my government already).

So thank you all, and especially Fred, again for your great hospitality. I need to buy an Ireland sticker for my tail plane now...

See you hopefully soon!

Dear All,

after I got in contact with you, I can't wait anymore to be in Ireland this weekend.
My two friends are two collegues from my team who just decided to join me for the weekend. They don't fly, but they are definitely up for the Guinness afterwards. I showed this conversation to my "flying mate" and we decided that we will definitely come back sometime next year (for the buns)

Fred, I think it would be nice to meet you already in Dublin, Ill send you my contact data by e-mail.

Keith, I will bring all my equipment for northern holidays :-)

Beware, Karl is coming - we will have rain and no wind at all. :!:

despite the weather forecast, I booked the rental car now and also the night at the Moss House for Saturday.

Hope to meet some of you!

Yes, we have some rain in Germany as well...but I was on holiday in Scotland this year and believe me - nothing can shock me anymore...

It is clear that the best wind is on the weekend I'm leaving again...

Keith, unfortunately only my Excel Competition 3 (Simprop) fitted in that box. My favourite gliders have to stay at home, but I hope this will not be the last time I come to Ireland - AirLingus is really cheap from Munich...
Combat flying? If I crash, I don't have to send it back, right? On the other hand, I work for a glue company...Could be fun anyway...

Regarding the car rental - my collegue from Belgium told me (he is supposed to book the car) - I will double check (thank you Dennis)

So just in case we meet - beware of the crazy Dutch and even more crazy Belgium guy who will come with me...

Amazing forum guys...

Fred & Stephan, thanks for your quick replies.

Fred, I will arrive quite late on Friday (21.30) and I learned that car rental closes at 20.00 at the airport (??) - so I have no clue how long it actually takes me (and two collegues) to get out towards Dublin. In addition, I sent my glider already to my company in Dublin - so the guys there must unpack the entire delivery (which is not 100% private :-)) and I need to pick it up Friday evening or Saturday morning at these guys home(they don't know yet) - so no, thank you a lot, but unfortunately I'm not available on Friday evening. For Saturday I just thought it makes sense to stay close to Mt. Leinster - I don't find any coordiantes of the B&B Stephan mentioned. Can we just go there or should I book in advance?

It would be very nice to meet you Fred, but normally weather doesn't like me... :!:
Thank you,
Karl
