Slope Soaring / Important Notice for Tountinna Flyers from Sept 2020
« Last post by rogallo on August 25, 2020, 17:04:05 PM »

Dear Ralph,

Many thanks for taking my call this afternoon. We will add your email to the weekly flight plan email also. Please find some information below and attached in relation to the Tellus Survey. We would be grateful if you could share this information with your members.

As mentioned, , the Tellus Survey is a nationwide programme that collects geochemical and geophysical data on rocks, soil and water across Ireland to help us sustainably manage the environment, natural resources and protect public health in the future.

To collect this data, the latest phase of the survey will involve an aircraft flying at low heights from September 2020 until the end of the year (weather permitting) over Counties Laois, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Waterford, and neighbouring parts of Kildare, Carlow, Offaly and Cork. The Tellus website – – is updated weekly with the planned flight schedule if you want to know more information.

The aircraft will fly at a low level of 60 metres over rural areas (approximately eight times the height of a standard two storey house), rising to 240 metres over urban areas. The sound of the plane is similar to that of a passing lorry and it may startle sensitive livestock, such as horses, pedigree cattle, sheep-in-lamb and poultry flocks.

As it is vital to raise public awareness of the project, particularly amongst farmers and animal owners, the Tellus team is continuing to deliver an ongoing communications campaign across the regions. In advance of the survey starting, we want to inform all relevant and interested stakeholders that the Tellus Survey will be taking place. We would appreciate your help and support in disseminating this information to your members and networks.

As an aid, please find attached the latest information pack that includes more information about the Tellus Survey, FAQs, images of the aircraft and latest fly zone, and suggested social media and website posts to inform your networks.

If you have any concerns about the survey, particularly if you own sensitive livestock, or if you are interested in finding out more about the project,  you can contact the Tellus Freephone information line on 1800 45 55 65 or visit You can also follow Tellus on twitter @TellusGSI.

Do not hesitate to get in touch if you need any further information.

Best regards,

Aiveen Finn

Hi all, sorry for late contact re Tountinna on Saturday. One of our club members-Dermot O’Flynn died suddenly last Sunday and I wasn’t sure if the event would go ahead.
Anyway, we’re all set to go, meeting about 10ish and fly all day.
Re covid 19, naturally we will observe what is now the norm as regards social distancing etc. I would like everyone attending to sign in when they arrive and leave a contact no in case we need to do some contact tracing at a later date. Everyone should bring their own food and drinks with them, we won’t be supplying anything on the day.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, at the moment the forecast looks good with N winds forecast.
If you haven’t been to T T before, you can contact me here and I’ll arrange details on how to get there.
Regards, Gerry Buckley
